Mary Edith Watkins McFarland, 64, of Wytheville died Friday, July 10, 2009, at her home. Funeral service was held Monday, July 13, at 7 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ron Newberry officiating. A graveside committal service was held Tuesday, July 14, at 11 a.m. at West End Cemetery. She was born Nov. 22, 1944, in Bland County, daughter of the late Houston Crockett and Helen Elizabeth Smith Watkins. She was preceded in death by a brother, Houston "Booter" Crockett Watkins Jr. Survivors include five sons and two daughters-in-law, Howard Russell "Buster" Rakes of the home, Johnny Miles "Hickey" Mulkey Jr. and Micheal Anthony Mulkey, both of Speedwell, Stacey Wayne and Laura Mulkey of Radford, Keith Edward and Stephanie Mulkey of Wytheville; five sisters, Dora M. "Fuzzy" Grubb of Wytheville, Velvet Thacker of Ashland, Elsie Monahan of Marion, Lillie Belle Getting of Colorado and Edna Sutliff of Wytheville; five brothers, Robert Lee Kading of Wytheville, Leroy Watkins of Ashland, James Edward "Billy" Watkins of Rural Retreat, Joseph Earl "Joe" Watkins and John David Cregger, both of Wytheville; several grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.
