Frank Lemmon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 29 to Aug. 5, 2009.
Frank T. Lemmon, 81, beloved husband, father and friend, died peacefully, Friday, July 24, 2009 at The Pines in Davidson, N.C. He was born in Marion to Alexina Lincoln Lemmon and Frank T. Lemmon. After graduating from Davidson College, he attended Union Theological Seminary in Richmond. There he met his wife of 57 years, Georgia Powell. After graduating, he served two churches, Rosewood Presbyterian and Gregory Memorial Presbyterian in Eastern Virginia. In 1957, he was called to be the organizing minister of Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, where he served for 14 years. He then founded a pastoral counseling practice, also served as supply pastor for Pittsboro Presbyterian and Mount Pleasant Presbyterian churches. During Frank and Georgia's later years in Raleigh, their church home was W. Raleigh Presbyterian. The couple moved to Davidson in 2000. He was a kind and affirming man who found the good in everyone he met. He loved life. Even in his last years of declining health, if anyone would ask how he was, he'd reply, "Fine as frog hairs split down the middle." He fell madly in love with Georgia the moment he met her and his love for her never wavered. He showed his love for his three children by the joyful times he spent with them. His warmth, playful spirit and loyalty helped him to form deep and abiding friendships. He served for many years on the board of the Frankie Lemmon School and Developmental Center in Raleigh, named in memory of his third child, who had Down syndrome. He helped with fundraising and acted as mentor and cheerleader to the school's staff. Survivors include his wife, Georgia; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Rosa Lemmon; son and daughter-in-law, John and Susan Lemmon; daughter, Laura Thise; grandchildren, Scott Lemmon and wife, Monica, Nick Lemmon, Olivia Moulton and husband, Richard; and great-granddaughter, Claire Moulton. A memorial service was conducted in the Lingle Chapel at Davidson College Presbyterian Church in Davidson on Tuesday, July 28, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Bill Tiemann presiding. A reception followed the service. Graveside services will be conducted on Wednesday, July 29, at 12:30 p.m. at Rose Lawn Cemetery in Marion with the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. The family requests that donations be made to the Frankie Lemmon School and Developmental Center, c/o Frankie Lemmon Foundation, 2301 Stonehenge Drive, Suite 102, Raleigh, N.C. 27615. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.seaverbrown.com. Seaver-Brown Funeral Service and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Dear Mrs. Lemmon and Family,
Please accept my condolences and prayers for you during this time of loss.
I had the privilege to work at Frankie Lemmon School for 5 years during the late '80's. I was always struck by the warmth, kindness and generosity of spirit both you and your husband displayed. I know that spirit continues to live on in the school and community in Raleigh.

With Deepest Sympathy,

Bill & Nancy Clark

Georgia and all the Lemmon family, it was indeed a joy to be with family and friends Tuesday to celebrate and give thanks to God for the spontaneous love and outgoing affection that bubbled up from the life of Frank since I first met him as a classmate at seminary. I am sending bulletins and obits of Frank to other classmates who could not be present encouraging them to join us in supporting the Frankie Lemmon School to his memory. The strong comfort of God remain with you through your sorrow and tears. Shalom, Bill and Nancy Clark

Dear Mrs. Lemmon,
It was such a bittersweet pleasure for Joseph and I to be with you, the Family, and kind Friends at Rev. Lemmon's Memorial Service yesterday. There was so much joy as we all remembered the way your Husband's life touched each of us personally. His grace will continue to live with us. He will be missed.

Frank was a wonderful human being, a special child of God, a person I loved very much. I have missed his presence these past few years at West Raleigh Presbyterian Church where he played a significant role as a member of our church family. My prayers of comfort are with Georgia and her family and I send my abiding love to all of you. I wish I could have been at Frank's memorial service this morning.
Ever yours,

I met Frank and Georgia soon after they moved to Davidson, and consider myself fortunate to have come to know them. They truly are Disciples of Christ and were always a witness to us all whenever we were together. Peace.

Thanks to Frank I believe that there is no fat or calories in a big Sunday church pot-luck dinner. He had a way of bringing joy and laughter to all he met. His faith permeated all he said and did and it was contagious. Georgia, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Thank you for sharing Frank with us at West Raleigh.

Love, Martha Spayd Bursey

I worked at Frankie Lemmon School for 3 years in the early 1980's and it was indeed a special place. I met with Frank Lemmon as part of my initial job interview and I remember him as a kind man. I left Frankie Lemmon when I moved to Charlotte with my husband in 1986, but my experience there remains part of the fabric of my life. My condolences to the Lemmon family. (And I bet Frank Lemmon continues to act as a "cheerleader" and "mentor" to the Frankie Lemmon School as he looks down from heaven!)

I want to extend my sympathies to the Lemmon family. My aunt and uncle, Ruth and Vern Holman, were charter members of Hudson Memorial. They are both deceased now, but I remember how they spoke fondly of Rev. Lemmon and how much they respected and appreciated his guidance of Hudson Memorial. They are all rejoicing in heaven now.

Like the Good Shepherd, Frank brought our family back to the Presbyterian Church where we have remained, still at the church he organized, for some 43 years. As a man of grace, heaven must indeed be a brghter place for all the smiles and good will he now brings to it. God bless Frank T. Lemmon and the wonderful family he leaves behind.... With deepest sympathy, The R. H. Brenner family
