Carl Edward Atwell Sr.

Carl Edward Atwell Sr., 94, died Friday, July 31, 2009 in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was born in Smyth County to the late Jacob and Ethel Mae Snow Atwell and was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Atwell, brothers, Herbert Atwell, George "Hop" Atwell, Essie Atwell, and sisters, Betty Turley, Virginia "Wick" Goodman, Ellen Cullop and Mary Cullop. He attended Goodman's Chapel in Rich Valley and was self employed in the timber business for many years. Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Lonie Grace Gates Atwell; four children, Carl Atwell Jr. and wife, Carol, of Marion, Frank Atwell and wife, Lydia, of Rural Retreat, Sally Arrington of Marion, Jo Ann Moore and husband, Dennis, of Rich Valley; sister, Louise Kearley and husband, Olen, of Jonesboro, Tenn.; grandchildren, Rita and Page Cutler, Brenda and Tim Shelton, Ernie and Melissa Atwell, Kevin and Christie Atwell; great-grandchildren, Josh Sexton, Evan Atwell, Ethan Atwell, Elliott Atwell, Samantha Atwell, and Abigayle Atwell; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, at Bradley's Funeral Home in Marion with the Rev. Pat Gilbert officiating. Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Sunset Cemetery in Rich Valley. The family received friends Sunday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
