Shirley Smith Obituary

Shirley Ann Anderson Smith, 63, of Rural Retreat, died Friday, July 31, 2009. She was born in Holston on March 18, 1946, the daughter of the late Rush and Mae Gentry Anderson. She was a member of Rural Retreat Pentecostal Holiness Church and was preceded in death by three sisters, Wilma Anderson, Louise Keys, Joyce Plott, and three brothers, R.C. Anderson, Ernest Anderson, and Wade Anderson. Survivors include her husband, Joseph W. Smith; five daughters, Debra L. Hyler, Donna L. and Mark Powell, Diana L. and Ricky Cressell, Denise L. and Terry Crigger, all of Rural Retreat, and Darlene L. and Jerry Turpin of Max Meadows; two sons, Daniel L. Hyler and Darren L. and Connie Smith, all of Rural Retreat; four sisters, Helen Craver and Lessie Stapleton, both of Rural Retreat, Mary Keys of Sugar Grove, and Betty Brown of Carson City, Nev.; two brothers, Robert "Bob" Anderson of Wytheville and Blaine Anderson of Johnstown, Pa.; 17 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, with the Rev. Roger Crigger officiating. A graveside committal service was conducted Monday at Slemp Cemetery in Sugar Grove. The family received friends Sunday at Rural Retreat Pentecostal from 5:30 p.m. until service time. The family suggested that those who prefer may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Pentecostal Holiness Church. Lindsey Funeral Home, Rural Retreat, was in charge of arrangements.
