Fannie was the first person I met when arriving at MudFork October 23, 1946. I will always remember her for I spent the next year living on the "Home Place". She and Grandma Viola taught me with love, how to live and play; cook and wash dishes; wax floors and recite poetry. I will always cherish my memories of my early years. Fannie had the first TV on Mudfork and invited all the neighbors on Saturday night to come and watch the Grand Ole Opry. We cooked and baked to have goodies for all to enjoy. Fannie was my brides maid at my first wedding and always remained special to me. Dad, Walter, has shared so much with me these past 9 years since my mother, Georgia, died. I have begun to write these stories up and hope to share them with family. My heart goes out to all who loved her. Fannie was indeed one of a kind.

My heart goes out to all the family and friends of Fannie, she truly touched a lot of lives. I've heard Fannie mentioned nearly all my life and finally started getting to know her at our annual Sluss family reunions when she could attend. I only wish I had had more time to have spent talking with her and hearing all the stories. I've been trying to get all the Sluss/Johnson family history and family/Mudfork stories recorded before all those wonderful memories are faded away. I loved my visits to Mudfork as a child and I can see why Fannie loved being there as well. Truly we have lost a great treasure with her passing and a dear friend to all.
I welcome anyone who would like to share some of her stories or your own regarding life on Mudfork, family history, etc. I'm currently looking for a new format to put it all into but would be happy to share once I do.
God's peace be with you all.
With love and heavy heart,
Mrs. Terry (Sluss) Chancellor

Miss Dickenson came into out lives when the late Dr. Duncan and I moved to BLuefield and he began practice at Saint Luke's Hospital.
SHe helped care for our son when I was ill and became a cherished friend of the family.
The years can never dim my memories of her kindness, cheerfulness and "down home" cooking.

So many memories bounded through my mind when I was told of your passing. Thank you for teaching me about the value of family and my link to those in the past. You were the best, Aunt Fannie. I loved you.

Fannnie was a dear friend to us down through many years. She kept us apprised of all the Sluss family events. The last time we visited her she said it always made her happy to see the light on at the Sluss house next door. Her home was a delight, full of memorabilia and she was as gracious as ever. We were saddened to hear it had burned down and even more saddened to hear of her death, she was an icon indeed!
Our love and condolences to her family.

I grew up in the Mudfork Church and remember Fannie well. I had no idea that she was a member of the Daughters of the Confederacy, but I was aware of her extensive knowledge of her own family history.
My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time. Especially Eddie Dickenson and Wayne Sluss who with the families also attend the Mudfork Church.

To the Family of Cousin Fannie,
A great LADY has left us to cherish the memories we have of her kindness and help.
Fannie was instrumental in my genealogy work of all our families. I made and sent to her two books about her Dickenson and Kinzer families.
Once when I was talking to Fannie, about 15 years ago, she was giving me a lot of dates of her families births, marriages, etc. I said to her, "Cousin Fannie, the next time someone comes would you feel OK letting them take your family bible and copy those pages for me?" Dear Fannie, said, "I am not reading this from a bible it is coming out of my head." Ha. Over the next few weeks as I checked all the dates to different sources, they were all right!
Fannie expressed to me that she did not have a copy of her dad's death certificate. I wrote a check and sent to Roanoke for a copy. They would not let me have as copy as I was neither wife or child. I sent the check to Fannie and she sent for the certificate and received same. She was so grateful.
Another time I had called Cousin Fannie and she said, "Wait someone is at the door." I waited and waited and waited. I was just ready to hang up and call the sheriff of Tazewell Co., VA as I was afraid she might have fallen. Fannie picked up the phone and said, "I had to get the rest of my cabbage cut." I laughed and laughed.
My grandparents are Samuel Henry Shrader, 1891-1979 & Ocie Lee TABOR Shrader, 1893-1975. My mom is Hettie Marie SHRADER Eagle, 1918-2006.
Sincerely, Karen EAGLE Moman

To Miss Dickenson's Family, I extend my deepest sympathy. I never really got to know Fannie while I was living on Mudfork, and before I left for NC years ago. Living on Mudfork, I never had the chance to visit her beautiful home or hear her wonderful historical stories. Wish I had. I am very thankful to her for her sharing the things she has at the library. Maybe someone in the family will take up where she left off. I am very sorry I never spent time with her.

Miss Fannie was an icon in our family. Her love of family history and her great memory preserved stories from past generations. She was a true blessing and time spent with her was a joy. We will dearly miss her.
