Ellis G. "Garland" Harrison Ellis G. "Garland" Harrison, age 86 of Bluefield, VA, died Mon., Aug. 31, 2009 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center in Bluefield, WV; strong to the end, he never waivered in his commitment and love for his family. He was born June 16, 1923 at Cliffield, VA, and was a son of the late James Bandy "J.B." Harrison and Mae Turner Harrison. Mr. Harrison was a United States Navy veteran of World War, II, and was a member of the VFW Post #9696 in Bluefield, VA. He was a retired employee of the N&W Railroad and attended the Tazewell First Assembly Church of God. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Beulah Davidson and Margaret Shannon; five brothers, William "Bill" Harrison, Clarence Harrison, Blaine Harrison, Carl Harrison, and Firm Harrison; one great-grandson, Brandon Hicks. Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Virginia Ruth Harrison; daughter, Janis Moore and husband, Michael, of Bluefield, VA; son, Jimmy W. Harrison and special friend, Tina Winter, of Columbia, SC; two brothers, W.J. "Jack" Harrison and wife, Verla, of Cliffield, VA, and George Harrison and wife, Rhonda, of North Tazewell, VA; two sisters, Eva Fisher of Leesburg, VA and Dana Roberts and husband, Clyde, of Chattanooga, TN; special family members, Karen Harrison, Janet Harrison, and Isabelle Harrison, and many special in-laws. He loved to be surrounded by his grandchildren, Michael Hicks and wife, Deana, Tammy Reeves and husband, Dennis, Valerie Espel and husband, Jake, and Melissa Williams and husband, Justin. Many happy hours were spent with great-grandchildren, Bradley Hicks, Travis Simms, Christian Simms, Madison Simms, Kayla and Ashley Reeves, and special nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services for Ellis G. "Garland" Harrison were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thurs., Sept. 3, 2009 at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, VA, with the Rev. Ray Amos officiating. Entombment followed at Grandview Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Bluefield, VA. Pallbearers were Michael Hicks, Dennis Reeves, Troy Harris, Randy Monger, Jason Hodge, Darrell Fisher, Jake Espel and Justin Williams. Military graveside rites were conducted by members of VFW Post #9696 in Bluefield, VA and by members of the American Legion Post #14 in Pocahontas, VA. The family received friends at the funeral home from 6 - 8 p.m. Wed., Sept. 2, 2009. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to The American Red Cross: Mercer Mall PO Box 7211 Bluefield, WV 24701 and The Bluefield Virginia Rescue Squad: PO Box 170 Bluefield, VA 24605.
