Herman Willard Reed Mr. Herman Willard Reed, age 80, of the Brown Mountain section of Jewell Ridge, VA, passed away Mon., Aug. 31, 2009 at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born in Macon County, NC, and was the son of the late John Robert Andrew and Effie Mae Keener Reed. He had made his home in the Jewell Ridge area most of his life and was a retired miner with the Grassy Branch Coal Company. He was a member of the Chicken Ridge Pentecostal Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Bessie Williams, and two brothers, Thurman and Ervin Reed. Survivors are: his wife: Edna Geraldine Cooper Reed; one daughter: Leshia Matney and husband, Jeff, of Abingdon, VA; three sons: Willard Leroy Reed and wife, Linda, of Benson, NC, Ronald Leon Reed and wife, Joyce, of Jewell Ridge, VA, Leonard Keith Reed of Cedar Bluff, VA; one sister: Ruby Lee Westall of Burnsville, NC; special caregivers and friends: Bea Blankenship, Connie Stiltner, Cindy Stiltner, Kay Horn, Mae Vandyke, Bonnie Keene, Janice Keene, Nancy Buress, Rhonda McGlothlin, Paula Slate, Elizabeth Osborne, Cierra, and all the nurses of Total Home Health and the Chores and Errands Ambulance Service. Eight grandchildren: Roma Lynn Matney and husband, Brad, Andrea Dale Penny and husband, David, Bridget Ann Sauls and husband, Jason, Jillian Renee Rasnick, Brian Keith Reed, Matthew Ray Reed, Christopher Willard Ira Reed and wife, Savanah, and Jeremy Wayne Reed; six great grandchildren: Jordan Osborne, Alyssa Reed, Makayla Matney, Sydney Reed, Abigail Penny, and Jeremiah Sauls. Funeral services for Herman Willard Reed were conducted Fri., Sept. 4, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, VA, with the Rev. Troy Lester, Rev. Joe Horne, Rev. Lawrence Horn, Rev. Ken Mitchell, and Rev. Monroe Greeley officiating. Interment followed at the Reed Family Cemetery on Brown Ridge near Jewell Ridge, VA. Grandsons and nephews served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were: Dr. Larry Mitchell, Dr. Sharif Shoukry, Dr. Brian Maggard, Dr. Mary Valley, and Nurses at Clinch Valley Medical Center. Friends called after 6:00 p.m. Wed. and Thurs. evenings at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, VA.
