Virginia D. Newman Virginia Blanche Dixon Newman, 86, of Wytheville died Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009, at Wythe County Community Hospital in Wytheville after a long illness. Funeral service was held Friday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with her grandson, the Rev. Timothy Shaw, officiating. A committal service will be held Saturday, Sept. 19, at 11 a.m. at the Roselawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Princeton, W.Va. She was born Feb. 7, 1923, in Ashe County, N.C., daughter of the late Cicero and Emma Darnell Dixon. She was formerly of Elkhorn, W.Va., and Chilhowie. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest David Newman. Survivors include a daughter, Lorene Alice Newman Shaw and husband, John, of Staunton; four sons, Jerry Lee Newman and wife, Judy, of Christiansburg, David Otis Newman and wife, Sharon, of Fort Washington, Md., Bruce Allen Newman and wife and loving caregiver, Cathleen, of Wytheville, Joseph Edwin Newman and wife, Debbie, of Columbia, S.C.; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the Lead Mines Rescue Squad, Habitat for Humanity, the Samaritan's Purse or Agape Food Pantry. Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.
