Michael Wayne Short Michael Wayne Short, age 60 of North Tazewell, VA, passed away Sun., Sept. 13, 2009 at his home. Born May 10, 1949 in Richlands, VA, he was the son of Clarence David Short of Baltimore, MD, and the late Mary Lucille Ball Short. He was a United States Army Veteran of the Vietnam War having served with the MACV 69 Company. He was a member of the American Legion Post 164 at Grundy, VA, and a member of Casey-Shortt VFW Post 9640. Michael was a retired coal miner with Island Creek Coal Company and a member of UMWA. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife, Diane Short; one nephew, Sgt. David (Bo) Lambert; and one niece, Michelle Wheeler. In addition to his father, he is survived by two sons, Benjamin (Po) Elswick and wife, Crystal, of Cedar Bluff and Raubi Elswick and wife, Michelle, of Richlands; two daughters, Amy Hollaway of Richlands and Sarah Short of Beckley, WV; three sisters, Mary Sue Lambert and husband, Howard, of Wardell, Crystal Martinez and husband, Emilio, and Robbin Richey, all of Baltimore, MD; three brothers, Darrell Short and wife, Dana, of Wardell, Dave Short and wife, Nancy, of Mavisdale and Jonathan Short and wife, Allison, of Baltimore, MD; five grandchildren, Alexa Elswick, Ian Elswick, Gabriella Elswick, Coty Short and Hanna Nichole Hollaway; several nieces and nephews also survive. Graveside services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Wed., Sept. 16, 2009 at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, VA, with Rev. Danny Houchins officiating. Military graveside rites were conducted by American Legion Post 164. Those attending the graveside service met at the cemetery.
