Gary Pickard Obituary

Pickard, Gary
87, of Peoria, Arizona passed away on March 23, 2011. Born in New York City, Gary and his wife Lee (+Aug. 4, 2008) with whom he shared 56 years, traveled to Mexico on a honeymoon and liked it so much they stayed for 10 years. Previous to his marriage Gary served in the 10th Mountain Division of the Army Ski Troops. Gary and Lee moved to Phoenix in 1962 and started Pickard Travel Service, still a going concern. For many years, Gary wrote a weekly column "Mexican Notebook" for the Arizona Republic, was active in the Arizona-Sonora Commission, the Kiwanis Club and made hundreds of presentations in the Phoenix area and in Arizona on travel destinations. Survivors are son Michael and daughters Kim and Deborah. Cremation was handled by Best Funeral Services. Donations in Gary and Lee's names should be made to the Arizona Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.

My deepest sympathies go to Mr. Pickard's family. My memories go way back to 1962 when he hired me as a secretary in his insurance business, then at the 12th floor of the old Guarantee Bank Building. I learned much under his tutelage.
