WILLIAMSTOWN -- William E. Coons, 73, of 57 Maple St. died Friday at home.
Born in Williamstown on Feb. 6, 1934, son of Elmer and Dorothy Lewis Coons, he was a 1953 graduate of the former Williamstown High School.
Mr. Coons was a veteran of the Massachusetts National Guard.
He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier at the Williamstown post office for 28 years, retiring in 1992. Before that, he was employed by the former Gordon & Sutton Contractors as a carpenter for about eight years and worked for the carpenters' union in Albany, N.Y., for several years.
He enjoyed reading, woodworking and working on his 1971 truck.
His first wife, the former Valerie H. Leach, whom he married in February 1960, died Dec. 21, 1972.
He and his wife, the former Donna Briggs, celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary Aug. 2.
Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Carol Spencer-Coons of Seattle; a son, David L. Coons of Stark, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral to celebrate the life of William Coons, who died Friday, Oct. 19, 2007, will be conducted Tuesday evening at 7 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapel, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Burial will be private. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire in care of the funeral home. Mr. Coons also leaves 11 grandchildren, Samantha, Shawn, Eli, Kayla, Dan, Steven, Tyler, Austin, Abby, David and Emma; and a great-grandson, Landon. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and enjoyed spending time with his family.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
