Kipper, You have left a vast mountain range of dedication and service for the sport of girls ice hockey in CT. Even today phones ring with your influence in the sport.........Your Mom and Dad are very proud and so are the fellow coaches that understand the humanness that comes from mentoring the players over the two decades. You are the Best ! We carry that torch, my friend.
Respectfully, your CCGHL confidente.

I COACHED FOOTBALL WITH KIP AT SIMSBURY HIGH. HE WAS ALWAYS GOING FOR THE SCORE, LEAVING MY DEFENSIVE TEAM IN THEIR OWN TERRITORY.
WE HAD GREAT TIMES WITH THE PLAYERS AND STAFF OVER THE YEARS.
I THOUGHT OF HIM OFTEN .
I JUST RECEIVED WORD OF HIS PASSING.
MAYBE HE IS STILL GOING FOR THAT BIG SCORE---HOPEFULLY HE WILL GET IT.
GOD BLESS HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

In my fondest memories of a beloved ice hockey coach, Kip is standing sneaker-clad under the bright lights of the newly renovated Simsbury Farms Ice Rink. It is late, probably 10 or 11 pm, on a cold Monday night in January, and Kip is slaming his hockey stick on the ice. Bang... bang... bang. He says nothing, just slams his stick and watches with a serious face. It is a simple but effective warning. Skate.
With dedication and love, if not always with patience, Kip shaped a generation of Simsbury girls. In his demand of us to "be the best" he instilled a strong work-ethic, self-confidence, discipline in his girls. We will carry these gifts throughout our lives, so that in his passing Kip leaves a legacy of love and the insititution of women's ice hockey in Simsbury.
I wish Kip's loved ones comfort and peace during this time of mourning.

Mr. and Mrs. Sowpel, Karen, Kim and families,
I wanted to express my heartfelt condolences to you all on Kip's passing. He was a good friend and we had similar "temperments", which made our many discussions over the years interesting, exciting and above all entertaining for us and all who were around us. I will miss him very much. Even though I had not seen Kip regularly for some years, when I did we connected as if we had spoken the previous day. I was fortunate enough to see him some weeks back after he had returned to town and we spoke for a few minutes. He gave me one of those famous bear hugs, as he always did, and with that I will always remember the kind heart, kind soul and good person he was.

My deepest sympathies to Kip’s family, Mindy and all those who loved him. I’ve known Kip for 35 years as a friend, employer and fellow NEBL owner. I always appreciated how much the big guy relished life and how much he let his genuine care for others shine through.
At COMPASS we worked together for 15 years, I watched Kip touch the lives of many very troubled inner-city young men and women. Kids who had been abused or neglected were treated with respect by Kip and the students returned that respect to Kip. For many years Kip would take our students to Gettysburg and Washington DC during the spring. For nearly all, this was their first travel experience. Kip had them well prepared for the historical sites and would somehow find a way to see a baseball game a Camden Yards.
A citizen of two cities, Boston and Simsbury, he will be greatly missed in both.

Kip was my hockey coach many many years ago. I was a member of the first girl's team at Simsbury High School ('87/'88-'90/'91). Kip would commute all the way from Boston to teach us so much! I went to a girl's H.S. game a couple years ago and was SO impressed with how he had brought the team to such great levels! He will be missed. May God bless his family.
