Robert Perry Obituary

83, of OceanView, Falmouth, Maine, formerly of Concord, Massachusetts, died after a long illness on March 28, 2008. Mr. Perry was a devoted family man, reader, as well as history and aviation buff. Mr. Perry was born in Danvers, Massachusetts in 1924, the son of J. Herbert Perry and Helen Bruce Perry. He graduated from Holten High School in 1942. Soon after that he began serving as a Navy Aircrewman in Torpedo Squadron 4. Mr. Perry graduated from the University of Maine in 1949 and during his junior year, from September 1947 through May 1948, attended The Special Course for American Students at the University of Stockholm, Sweden. During the Summer of 1948, he was employed at the Allied Military Permit Office in Stockholm, helping to process the travel of wartime refugees. About 30 years later, he visited his old haunts in Stockholm with his family members, and he never let go of his study and interest in the Swedish language. Mr. Perry married Anne Gorman, also of Danvers, Massachusetts in 1954. He was employed by Raytheon Company in Waltham, Sudbury, and Andover, Massachusetts for 34 years, retiring as a Subcontract Specialist in 1987. A small solar array, which he procured while working at Raytheon, is still located on the Moon, placed there by an Apollo 17 astronaut. While residing in Concord, Massachusetts he was an active member of The First Parish in Concord, serving on the Standing Committee for eight years. In retirement in Georgetown and Falmouth, Maine, he served as a Consumer Mediator for the Attorney General of Maine, where for several years he solved numerous problems for a host of very grateful people. He also was a member of the Georgetown Comprehensive Town Plan Committee. He much admired his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Anne, and three children: a daughter Jane, of Oakland, California, a son Bruce, of Byfield, Massachusetts, and a son Jim of Medway, Massachusetts. Mr. Perry's six grandchildren are Patrick and William Devaney of Oakland, California, Samantha and Benjamin Perry of Medway, Massachusetts, as well as Rachel and Scott Perry of Byfield, Massachusetts. Donations may be made in Robert Perry's memory to The Learning Center for Deaf in Framingham, Massachusetts, and to the American Cancer Society. While I knew Mr. Perry for only a relatively short time, I too can echo prior thoughts expressed here that he was a great family man. While growing up in Concord with Bruce and spending a lot of time at their house, I got to see firsthand the strong influence he had on his family. In particular, I remember that he was very good at recognizing when Bruce and I were up to no good and making sure that we kept out of trouble. Sad to say we did not always welcome his guidance but we always knew he cared and he helped us learn right from wrong. I am not surprised to hear that he helped others later on resolve certain consumer issues as he was very wise in his decesion making and people listened to him. I am very happy that he got to spend so much quality time with his friends and loving family in retirement. We will all miss you Mr. Perry.

Like my brother Kevin, I also knew Mr. Perry as the father of my friend who lived two doors down the block. When I was young I was only aware of seeing Mr. Perry come and go around the neighborhood. But as an adult I got to know him and appreciate his intelligence and the diversity of his interests. While I never got to know him well I have great admiration for the man who raised my good friend Bruce and his sister Jane and brother Jim. Also, let's face it, all those years of successful marriage are a wonderful accomplishment and a true gift to his family.

Growing up in Concord, Mass. two doors down from the Perry's, I only knew Mr. Perry as my good friend's Dad. In later years, I got to know Mr. Perry (I have a hard time calling him Bob, Robert) on a different level and got to appreciate his warmth and gracious personality as I became an adult. Now that I'm a Father, I can appreciate the challenges and rewards of raising children and respect people like Mr. Perry for being a wonderful Dad, friend and husband who has left this world a better place than when he came here. My family sends our condolences to the Perry family, but we know that Mr. Perry will be fondly remembered.
