Anne McCarthy Obituary

94, of Belmont, April 3, at her home after a brief illness. Born in Charlestown, and raised in Brookline. Miss McCarthy leaves her sister-in-law Regina and the late William E. McCarthy of Newton and Natick, 8 nieces and nephews: Mary Donahue Stearns and Nancy Donahue Gauron of Belmont, Patricia Donahue Gray of Lincoln, Leo C. Donahue, Jr. and Paul E. Donahue of Winchester, Ellen McCarthy Bravo of Bound Brook NJ, Jane McCarthy Boyle of Natick and Constance McCarthy Stevens of Medfield and 17 great nieces and nephews: Melissa and Jesse Gray, Samuel Stearns, Suzanne, Julianne Snow, Christina and Richard Gauron, Meg Clarissa and Sarah Donahue, Christopher and Abigail Donahue, Amanda, William, Van, Victoria and Molly Stevens and Sean Boyle. Predeceased by her parents Patrick A. & Mary A. (Murphy) McCarthy of Brookline, her sister, the late Mary Clarissa Donahue and her other brother Patrick A. McCarthy. She is also survived by her longtime caregiver, Geraldine Holliday. Funeral from Stanton Funeral Home, 786 Mt. Auburn St., (Rte. 16), WATERTOWN Monday at 8 AM. Funeral Mass in St. Camillus' Church, Arlington at 9 AM. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Sunday, 4-7 PM. Interment New Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Anne Snow McCarthy's memory to the Boston Catholic TV, P.O. Box 9196, Watertown, MA or to St. Camillus Parish, 1175 Concord Trnpk. Arlington MA 02474 would be appreciated. Late graduate Boston Academy of Notre Dame and Alumna Emmanuel College, Class of 1935. She was the first woman to be granted a Master's Degree in Mathematics from BC Graduate School of Arts & Sciences in 1937. She taught math at Mt. St. Mary's College in Hooksett, NH, prior to joining the staff of the Chief Economist at John Hancock. In 1950, she joined the Cambridge School Dept. teaching at both the elementary and secondary levels, until her retirement in 1977. She was on the faculty at the Morse School prior to her joining the Math Dept. At Cambridge Rindge & Latin, she served as acting head of the Math Dept. and was very active in the Math Assoc. of MA. She was Pres. of The Camb. Teachers Assoc. 1962-63 and former Pres. Of Iota and Alpha Epsilon Chapters of the Delta Kappa Gamma, the Educational Honor Soc. She was a longtime member of the Guild of the Infant Savior and the League of Catholic Women. She resided in Cambridge prior to moving to Belmont 1974. My deepest sympathy to all the family. I worked with Anne at CHLS
many years ago. She was a lovely person, cheerful and helpful to a new teacher. She certainly had a long life of dedicated service, quite a legacy.
