Janice Wilson Obituary

Died peacefully surrounded by family and friends on June 12, 2008, after a long illness with cancer. Born January 22, 1947, and raised in Seattle, WA. She attended the University of Washington earning a degree in Fine Arts. After graduation, Jan joined the Peace Corps and served as a teacher in Uganda. She would reminisce about using a walking stick while navigating the paths of Uganda so she could pound the ground as she walked to keep away the snakes. She narrowly escaped the regime of Idi Amin and fled to Paris. While in Paris, she studied the French language and fashion design. On her return to the U.S. she resided in Washington, D.C., Cambridge and Brookline, MA. For the past 20 years, she has lived in Brookline, MA with her daughter, Maria. In 1974, Jan was a founder of a women's clothing design and retail business which later became the popular Harvard Square store, Clothware. She later developed her own successful clothing design business under the label Jan Wilson Studio and for the past 25 years, she has been well-known throughout the women's fashion industry as a creative and visionary designer of women's leisure and business clothing. Her annual studio sale was a popular social event that brought the women of Boston together. Jan's motto was "bring a friend, meet a friend, make a friend". Over the ensuing years thousands of Boston women made the trek to her 5th floor walk up studio on A Street to be dressed by Jan. It was a "Boston Happening" that grew into the Designers Circus. Jan was known for her impeccable sense of style and generous spirit. She was an avid swimmer and for years was a regular with the womens morning swim that met at 5 AM at the West End Club, in Allston, Ma. Since 2004, Jan has worked for Coldwell Banker in Coolidge Corner. For many years she has been an active member of the United Parish Church, Brookline, MA, serving in many volunteer positions including head of the annual Thanksgiving dinner. Jan will always be remembered by her many friends by the words "generous", "giving" and "gentle". She encouraged everyone in times of difficulty and ceaselessly offered her friendship, kindness and wisdom to everyone who crossed her path. Her enthusiastic and gentle spirit will live on forever in the hearts of all those who knew her. Surviving are her daughter, Maria, and her sister, Marguerite Hayes, of Washington State. A memorial service will be held at the United Parish Church, 210 Harvard St, Brookline, MA on June 21, at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the "Friends of Jan Fund" c/o Brookline Bank; 1340 Beacon St. Brookline, MA 02446.

I knew Jan for many years as a friend and participant in her studio sales. She always had a smile and and a valiant spirit. Never one to complain when she got sick. She will be missed by her many friends.

Jan always gave you her smile and it was genuine. I remember how happy she was for me at my wedding shower in 1968. Her daughter was the light of her life as she sahred with us at one of the class reuninons. I am so sorry to hear of her passing. My thoughts and parayers go out to her family and close friends. I know she will be missed.

Dear Jan:
I liked you from the first time I met you; were we five? Your smile and the sound of your laughter is crystal clear in my mind. It was at your house that we all first played 'truth or dare.' I think you made me ring the doorbell with my nose. Your spirit has always been one of independence for me, and even so, boy, was I impressed when you went into the Peace Corps and then ended up in Boston and started designing! It raised the bar for a lot of us. Your visits to Seattle were always wonderful; remember, Maria, when we got into trouble with the neighbors for setting off fireworks on the 4th of July? Maria will always know she had the coolest and best mom, will be surrounded by those who love you both, and because of how much you loved her, she'll know that everything is possible in life.
You will always be in Boston for me, it will help fill that great empty place. On the other hand, I know, too, that you are surrounded by the greatest light, and your laughter is blessing the angels.
thank you for being part of my life.
love always,

I knew Jan from the WEH where we all swam. While we weren't close, I appreciated her spirit and her talent. She was a very special person.

Even in junior high and high school, Janice had a great sense of style. She was the one I looked to when I needed to know what was "cool."

I'm sad that we lost touch as we each moved to different parts of the country. I will always remember her expressive eyes and happy smile and the many talks we had as we journeyed thru our teen years.

My heart goes out to Maria. I hope you will sense the positive impact your mom had on the people in her life and that you sense her happy and adventurous spirit in your heart.

I had the good fortune to work with Jan for many years selling her wonderful clothing line. She was not only an exceptional designer-- she was truly fun to work with. I will always remember that amazing time working with her. My love and prayers, to Maria her family and close friends. Jan will be greatly missed by all of us.

I will always remember how much fun we had growing up and I will miss Jan. I wish I had been closer to her as adult women, we had so much in common but really did not get to share it. It sounds like she led an amazing life and her daughter is very lucky to have had her in her life. With much saddness goodbye Jan,
