Pamela Phillips-Eckle Obituary
83, of West Newbury, died surrounded by family, June 1st, in Stuart, Florida. She was in the process of preparing to return to New England for the summer. Born in Boston she grew up in Montserrat and attended Shore School in Beverly. She enjoyed summers with friends and family at the Beach Club in Magnolia and the Essex County Club. After graduation from Ovenden College School in Barrie, Ontario, she made her debut in the 1942-43 season and was a member of the Junior League of Boston. She enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and served two years during World War II, attaining the rank of Corporal and earning her pilots wings. After the war, she returned to Montserrat. She met Eastern Airlines Captain W. Martin Phillips of Elizabeth, NJ. Six months later, they were wed at Christ Church, Hamilton. They settled in West Newbury, MA at Arrowhead Farm where they raised their family. Pam was an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Newburyport, where she served on the Vestry and the Altar Guild. She and her husband Marty were avid sailors and were members of the American Yacht Club in Newburyport where she was a life member, and Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead. They cruised and raced the New England coast on Andiamo. Nineteen years after the death of Marty in 1980, she married George M. Eckle, also a retired Eastern Airlines captain, in 1999. They spent their winters in Stuart, FL returning to West Newbury for the summers. She was the daughter of Marmeduke P. and Constance B. Pearson of West Newbury. Niece to Vaughn Pearson of Toronto, Ontario and Lester B. Pearson of Ottawa, Ontario, former Prime Minister of Canada. Sister to the late Marmeduke E.A. Pearson of Hamilton, Ontario, Frederick G.N. Pearson of West Newbury, and the late Hubert J. Pearson of Beverly. Mother to Constance Phillips - Jones of West Newbury, Christopher M. Phillips of Chaing Mai, Thailand, and Charles F. Phillips of West Newbury. Grandmother to Gareth R. Martin Jones of Los Angeles, Katherine J. and Thatcher C. Phillips of West Newbury, and a good friend to many. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Newburyport on Thurs., June 26th at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the American Yacht Club, Post Office Box 1369, Newburyport, MA 01950.
