Sue Fisher Seeger

June 29, 2008

My name is Sue Fisher Seeger. I'm Barbara's first cousin once-removed. She and my father, Alvan Fisher, were first cousins.

We have a familiar hymn in the Episcopal church about all the saints in the world, with the refrain "And I want to be one too." Cousin Barbara, as she called herself in the Fisher tradition, was what I want to be one of too. She followed a long line of strong Fisher women -- her aunts, my great aunts in particular. They were adventurers, be it traveling the back roads of Westford or studying abroad in England. Barbara was spunky, and she had an unquenchable sense of adventure and curiosity -- and good humor. I feel blessed to have gotten to know her in the past two years.

Last Thanksgiving at Jack and Diane's the two of us talked a blue streak sharing family stories -- most of which were from Barbara. And to each story there was a bit of a twist, a little extra touch, sometimes spicy, about this or that. She kept me spellbound.

Barbara epitomizes all that constitutes for me and my siblings a "Fisher woman," strong, independent, regardless of age -- full of courage. compassion, intelligence, and humor. I want to be one too. Thank you, Cousin Barbara, for being a standard bearer and role model.
