Samuel Dorman Obituary
Age 98, of North Andover, formerly of Arlington, died peacefully on July 6, 2008. Beloved husband of the late Harriet S. Dorman, devoted father of Wendy McIntosh of Arlington, loving grandfather of Heather McIntosh Case of San Jose, California and Andrew J. McIntosh of North Attleborough and cherished great-grandfather of three. He also leaves his brother, William E. Dorman Jr., of Boxford and a dear friend, Barbara L. Norton, of North Andover. Sam was the son of the late William E. Dorman and Estelle Herrick Dorman, and brother of the late Benjamin H. Dorman and Priscilla B. Marty. Born in Lynn, Massachusetts in 1910 he was raised in Lynn and Georgetown and graduated from the Wentworth Institute in Boston. During World War II, he proudly served his country in the Coast Guard on the USS Wakefield, transporting troops and prisoners across the Atlantic several times. For 28 years, he worked at the Hood Rubber Company as a floor supervisor, and retired in 1969 when B.F. Goodrich bought Hood and moved the facilities out of state. Sam took an early retirement, rather than moving his family and home. Sam's passion was sailing and he was able to devote much time to that in his retirement. He married his long-time sweetheart, Harriet (Sammy), in 1935 and stood by her side until her death in 2003. There was little he enjoyed more than sailing up the coast of Maine with Sammy in his Tawny Loon. He was a former Commodore of the Manchester Harbor Boat Club, where he kept his boat for many years. He also had a great appreciation of classical music, especially the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and performed in choruses and stand-in roles in a number of operas in the 1920s. A private service for family and friends will be held at Harmony Cemetery in Georgetown. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Sam's memory to the Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 Merrimack St. Blg. 9 Lawrence Mass.
