Brett Kaplan Obituary

44, of Somerville, formerly of Sharon, Brookline and Gloucester, after a tenaciously courageous ten month battle with cancer died peacefully Saturday, July 5 at the Chilton House Hospice in Cambridge. At his bedside was his sister Marni Kaplan-Earle, brother-in-law John Kaplan-Earle both of Acton and his father Northeastern University emeritus professor Mort S. Kaplan of Rockport. Brett will be greatly missed by his mother Sandra Rubin Kaplan of Concord. He leaves many devoted family and friends including his step-mother Bailey C. Kaplan of Rockport, his niece Margaret Ruth Kaplan-Earle and his nephew Harrison Kaplan-Earle. He is survived by his loyal and loving Cocker Spaniel "Lady" who never left his side during his travails. Brett attended Sharon middle schools, the Gifford School in Weston and graduated from Brookline High School. After graduation he worked for the Wausau Insurance Company in Belmont. He moved to Gloucester in the middle 1990s and worked on Cape Ann in the construction trades. He later worked in Belmont, Medford and Somerville as a property manager. He was an avid gardener and fisherman. The Kaplan family thanks Ms. Mary Baudanza of Belmont for the love and friendship she showed Brett during the past ten years. A memorial service is planned at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 11 at the Bigelow Chapel at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made in Brett's memory to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund. Dear Marni, Sandy, Mort and family, My sympathies go to you and the rest of your family, as well as all of Brett's friends. He and I shared many moments of laughter during his last few months that really gave me inspiration to keep the faith in living. I hope his flame will burn eternally in all the hearts and lives he touched as well as it will in mine.
