Charles McCabe Obituary

Of Boston formerly of Wenham lost his battle with cancer on July 7, 2008. CJ, Charlie or Doc as he was known to those who loved him was born February 10th, 1948. He was known for saying that he could never believe, "a little boy from Asbury Park, NJ made it all the way to Boston to end up being a physician at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and a professor at Harvard Medical School." For him this was truly a dream come true. For over thirty years he devoted his life to medicine at the MGH and to teaching the future physicians of the world at Harvard Medical School. A loyal & selfless father to Krista McCabe & husband for 37 years to his wife Rose (Castellano) McCabe, friend & teacher; he died as he lived...his way. Memorial Mass in St. Joseph Church, 68 Cardinal O'Connell Way, Boston Monday, July 14th at 10 am. Relatives & friends are kindly invited to attend. In lieu of flowers his wife Rose & daughter Krista request that gifts be made to either of the two funds that have been established in his name at the MGH and Harvard Medical School: Charles J. McCabe Jr., MD Endowed Lectureship in Surgical Education at the MGH, MGH Development Office, 165 Cambridge St., Ste 600, Boston MA 02114 or The Charles J. McCabe, MD Prize Fund at Harvard Medical School, Office of Resource Development, 401 Park Dr., Ste 22 West, Boston MA 02215. Dr. McCabe requested that all who attend his services wear bright colors instead of black. He said this is not a time for tears, but for joy, as this day should be as all days were for him in his life a beautiful one. It has been said that some people enter our lives and leave their imprint on our hearts forever; such was the case with our beloved Charlie. There has never been anyone like Charlie to cross the threshold of MGH, and there will never be anyone of his caliber to follow. He will hold a permanent place in the hearts of all of the MGH
ER staff who were lucky enough to have worked beside him and to have called him "friend." I love you from the bottom of my heart, Kellie.
