Sad to hear of this terrible news. Ruthie was my first real introduction to Boston. She and I worked together briefly and was always a bright spot in my days and everybody she came into contact with. I attended her wedding and remember her husband shedding a tear. He was so happy and in love. Thank you Dear Ruthie for the laughs.

Just found this sad news about Ruth whom I first met at West Chop where Ruth and I worked summers at the Cedars in the early '70s. She had such an infectious laugh that she would bring you to your knees from the full-throated, no holds-barred explosion of energy she would unleash. Always up for an adventure or a talk lasting late into the night, Ruth was a great friend whose lasting impression was the reason I was searching the internet today to see what she was up to. Glad to hear that she and Stephen had so many happy years together. The world's a dimmer place without her.

I had recently found Ruthie on Facebook after not seeing her in years and had hoped we'd see one another again. Then I heard this sad news. I was on the same floor as Ruth in Jewett at Vassar and remember so many times when we laughed ourselves silly, commiserating over bad romances and freaking out at the last minute before exams and staying up all night cramming. Then there were the trips to Pizza Town! Ruth will be missed for her spirit and infectious laugh!

My sister, Pam, and I remember Ruth from her summers on the Vineyard in our 20s - bright, bubbly, warm and always up for a good time. We are so sorry to here of her untimely death. May her vivacious spirit live on in her family and all those who knew and loved her as an inspiration and living tribute.

Reading everyone's comments is heartwarming during this difficult time. Ruth who was always modest, would be surprised by all the deserving comments. For me, the comments are supportive in this time. I was so very fortunate to have been with Ruth for 31 years. We had so many wonderful times together. I miss her now, and will forever. My best to you all - Stephen

Loved Ones,
On Saturday, July 19, 2008, there was a beautiful service for Ruth, outdoors in Wonalancet. Sitting next to a stream that ran along at the same level as the lawn, I looked into the woods and saw the sunlight dancing over the trunks of the trees. Ruth was there. Afterward, my Mom and I visited Ruth's fairy-tale cottage, ate wild blueberries from the forest, and took a sprig of mint from her amazing garden. (I wish I had that kind of energy for mine). Someone took a wonderful picture of a Monarch butterfly (Ruth?), finding her way to Steve.
I will really miss Ruth,
Elizabeth, 1st cousin

I share the memory of so many of my Vassar classmates of Ruth's wide, warm smile and contagious laugh. I will always remember her with love and affection from our days in Jewitt. Although not a member of the 4th floor freshman contingent (I was a Tower girl on 7), Ruth was outgoing and friendly to us all. This shocking news has left me reeling. My heartfelt condoloences to all who lived and worked with her. I know she will be deeply missed.

So sorry to hear about Ruth. I remember best her smile and her laugh, and her willingness to engage in whatever hijinks were afoot at 3AM in Jewett, or wherever. I will miss her lightness of spirit.

As all others have expressed on this page, I too am saddened to hear of Ruth's passing. I was another member of that 4th floor Jewett freshman group, and remember fondly the stories Kate Dwyer has so charmingly recounted. Although I haven't seen Ruth in years, the world is the poorer for her absence. My heart goes out to her family and friends.

I am so shocked and terribly terribly sorry. Ruth and I were good friends at Vassar, and had a lot of fun times and little adventures together. I lost touch with her for many years, and we found each other again on Facebook only last November. We had a couple of great phone conversations after that, and I was so happy to reconnect with her. She was so fun and vibrant and frankly, hilarious. I’ve attached picture of us from our senior year that I just love, and which I had recently sent to Ruth. It's a whole group of us who lived in the same dorm wing (Jewett 4W) in our freshman year, and we had remained friends throughout college. Ruth & I got such a big laugh out of it! She hadn't changed a bit as far as I could see!
A few things I remember from freshman year with Ruth:
I first knew Ruth as "the girl who lives in that SINGLE down the hall! And she has a MINI FRIDGE in her room!" (A huuuge deal back in 1972).
Because she had a fridge, Ruth was the go-to girl for late night snacks. When she told us the story of how she was Grover Cleveland's great granddaughter, we were impressed not so much by the fact that she was related to a US president, as we were by the fact that she was the namesake of the original Baby Ruth candy bar. Surely there was some angle she could exploit! We got her to write to the Baby Ruth candy company and tell them her tale, and lo and behold they sent an entire case of Baby Ruth bars to her dorm room! To this day, I never see a Baby Ruth bar without thinking of Ruth and that case of candy that dropped in from the sky one day.
I also remember very late one cold January night when we convinced someone (?) with a car that we should all go on a road trip to Delray Beach RIGHT THIS MINUTE to get some sun and fun at Elsie McCabe's beach house. So a bunch of us piled into the car, drove through the night to her parents' house in Baltimore, barged in at 4 a.m. or so, probably cleaned out their kitchen of any kind of snacks, and went on our way to Florida.
We had such great times together. Ruth was a wonderful, warm, funny person.

I didn't get to know Ruth until we lived on the same hallway our senior year in Main, and we brushed our teeth next to each other in the communal bathroom. Such a silly thing to remember about such a beautiful girl. She was charming and funny and a very bright spirit, even at the tender age of twenty, even at the crack of dawn. (Well, truth be told, it was never that early.) I am so shocked and saddened to hear of her passing, and my heart goes out to her family & friends.

This news is stomach wrenching. I can't think of anyone who enjoyed life and people more than Ruth. She had such a great sense of humor and was the center of life in our freshman year on 4th floor Jewett.

The sheer number and diversity of the messages in this guest book attest to what a wonderful person and friend Ruth has been to so many of us. I am so glad we had time to visit during my last trip to Boston. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Such wonderful family gatherings (in California, especially!) have flooded my thoughts and many prayers. Thank heavens Uncle Bolling was my confirmation teacher at St. Marks to bring us all together! Ruthie was always so full of personality and spark! She will be dearly missed by her family and all who ever knew her. Wish we Rankens weren't so far away. My love and prayers to each of you throughout these difficult days. May the peace of the lord be always with you.

This is terrible news and an enormous loss. Ruth and I only recently re-connected and were looking forward to good times. Some of our best memories were with Ruth at Ipswich (and that great Florida trip ). Never, ever a dull moment. I'm in shock. My love to her friends and family. VC 1978

I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Ruth's passing. I did not know her well at Vassar, but I remember with great fondness how she welcomed me, an awkward and shy freshman, to the campus community. She possessed a rare sense of style and grace. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family, friends and colleagues.

Memories of Ruth will fill us with tears of joy as we remember her humor, energy and light, and tears of sorrow at the loss of this special woman. There will be a little less energy and laughter at our VC reunions.

It seems so many of my happiest memories of Vassar include Ruth. Whether as a student or at reunions, when I picture myself laughing, I see Ruth with me.
The last thing she ever said to to me was "Miss Ya!" I'll think about her and miss her often.

Ruthie will always have a very special place in my heart and she will be dearly missed. I have fond memories of our family vacations in Newport Beach CA. Even though she could beat me in "indian leg wrestling", she was always a lot of fun. You are in my thoughts and prayers during this time of sorrow. God Bless and Peace be with you.
