Dear John, David and Debbie,
First, let me send you and your families our thoughts and prayers at this time of remembrance and overflow of love expressed for the celebration of dear Syl's life.
They say you can't go home again, but when I returned to Boston to be with my Nancy, Syl treated me like a brother. Over fifty years ago, your dad loaned me literally the jacket off his back so that I could have my first professional picture taken in New York. Wow! What a man. Silly as it sounds, that picture on the sheet music of my first record hangs in our den and I think fondly of him each time I see it, as a reminder of so many pleasant memories, but most of all Syl's great generosity and humor -- from this gesture to his fresh ravioli and our shared enthusiasm for the Red Sox. Your dad made the years melt away and became one of my best reasons to be back in Boston. Nancy and I spoke often with Syl -- and just weeks before we heard the sad news here in California. We are sorry to not have been there to pay tribute in person to you and your wonderful dad. Syl's love for his family and especially his devotion to dear Eleanor was an inspiration, matched only by his deep spirituality.
We will miss you, dear Syl.

John, David and Debbie: I know how much you must have loved both your mother and dad. You were not alone. There are not many things I am certain of, but one is that they are both with the Lord in heaven. Jeanne joins me in saying that you are in our thoughts and our prayers.
