Steven Cononico Obituary

Of Millis, formerly of Newton, suddenly, July 19, 2008, age 50. Beloved husband of Debbie (MacLeod) for 25 years. Devoted father of Margo and Alex Cononico. Brother of Joyce Lombardi of Waltham, and the late Bruce Cononico and Donna Panaggio. Son of the late Angelo and Elsie (MacLeod) Cononico. Steve captained one of the toughest football teams ever to play at Newton North High School. His coach Norm Walker considered him the best ever. His leadership derived from his physical and emotional strength and also his loyalty to his team. Northeastern University recruited him upon his graduation from Newton North in 1976. He also excelled as a pitcher in baseball, but more significant than his athletic abilities was his caring personality. More than anything, he loved his wife, children, family and friends. Though big and rugged, Steve's outstanding qualities were gentleness, decency and love. Funeral from the Andrew J. Magni & Son F.H., 365 Watertown St, Rt. 16, NEWTON, Thursday at 9:30AM. Followed by a Funeral Mass in Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Newton at 10:30AM. Interment in Newton Cemetery. Visiting hours Tuesday 6-8pm and Wednesday 2-4, 7-9pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Steven's name would be appreciated and may be made to: American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham 01701 or American Diabetes Association, 330 Congress St., 5th Floor, Boston, MA 02210. www.magnifuneralhome.com

Steve,
I can't believe it has been almost a year. You're still so very deeply missed and always will be. I think of you daily. Sometimes I think about the laughs and the happiness you brought to my life and to margo alex and debbie. You always made people smile, you had a way about you. You were truly the person that could brighten so many people's days by just being you. You had such a big, caring heart!! You always made me feel so special and so loved, and I want to thank you for that. Thank you for being so loving to both Dani and I. I know you're watching over Debbie Margo and Alex. I know you're still always around, we will never ever forget you Steve. When I see a penny on the ground I always, and will always, smile and think of all of my angels in heaven. Rest In Peace Steve , we love you
I love you and I miss you

Dear steve,
I can't believe its almost been a year, and it still hasn't gotten any easier to go on without you. I think about you everyday, and everytime I miss you more and more. You were like a father to me, and always brought a smile to my face when i saw you. And now all i have to do is look up to the sky, and you still bring a smile to my face. I love you and miss you so much.

What do you say to the man
Who you've known your entire life?
Who laughed along with you,
And shared all of your strife?

What do you say to the man
Who helped you along your way?
Who could always make you smile,
Even on the worst of days?

What do you say to the man
Who helped make you who you are?
Taught you to never give up,
Keep reaching for the stars?

What do you say to the man
Who has given you so much love?
When today comes, and he's no longer with you
You know he's still watching from above?

What do you say to the man
Who is your one and only father?
Who you had special moments with,
That are only shared between a daddy and his daughter?

What do you say to the man
Who taught you right from wrong?
In the times when it wasn't said or heard,
he loved you all along?

What do you say to the man
When words can't express what you want to say?
An I love you will have to suffice,
and I know you are never far away. <3

I can't believe it is coming up on a year. I miss you more and more everyday and I still don't believe that I will never see your smiling face again. I hope that you are at peace and that you know we all love you and miss you more then any words can say. I think about you everyday and wish you were here. I love you Dad.

Dear Dad,
What I remember most, Is the man who worked 6 days a week and still found the time to attend all my sports practices and games. I remember how scared I was to tell you that, I didn't want to play anymore. Mostly because you were such a great athlete. You caught me off gaurd by telling me " I have to do what makes me happy"
As I got older, we became friends. We would go to bars, New England dragway, sometimes you just wanted to go for a ride. And we did. The thing I hold closest to my heart are the Sunday Football games. We watched together over the past 6 or 7 years. What hurts the most is that you won't be here to see me try to become the man you were. I would give just about anything to spend one more Sunday with you.
I love you Dad!

To My Husband & Best Friend,
It has been almost 7 months since you've been gone. It seems to get more difficult each day. I miss you more each day. I'm glad we had the great life we had. I have alot of good memories. I wish I had one more day with you, just so I could say good bye and that I love you. Without you I have no life, just an exsistance. I try and go on without you, but I can't walk out the door. I turn back into the house and just think of you. I miss you and I love you. I will love you forever. Happy Birthday! You are so missed and I am lost without you.
Forever in my heart,
Deb

Hi Debbie, I know I signd this guestbook in July, but you have been in my thoughts lately and I am wondering how you and the kids are doing. I know when I saw you at the wake, you mentioned that I did not leave a contact address so you could not get in touch with me. I realized that I do not have a contact number for you either and am hoping that you may browse Steve's guest book once and awhile and see this message and get in touch with me. I hope that things have been a little easier for you, Alex and Margo. Please know, as I said before, we are all here for all of you anytime you need anything or want someone to talk and vent to. Take care. Love to Alex and Margo.

I am truly sorry for your loss. Steve and I met in Little League, and went to Day and North together. We played baseball and basketball at Day. In ninth grade, I was his catcher. He was a dominant athlete and a great guy, but what impressed me most was how warmly he greeted me and remembered our few shared experiences and friendships when I bumped into him a few times 30 years later.

Hi,

I just heard about this. I am very sorry.

I grew up on Clinton St. I was part of the crowd that had baseball games at Our Lady's parking lot (mentioned above); massive hide and seek games in the neighborhood; bought everything at their store; tooks trips to Chelsea with Angelo to buy stock for the store;probably spent every dime I had at their store for coke and candy.

When Steve went to FA Day I stayed at Our Lady's. I think the last time I saw Steve was at my 16th birthday party. We're the same age.

I will miss him greatly.

Debbi and Alex and family members,

I was sadly informed on the passing of Steve just yesterday. He was a fantastic person of great personal strength. I will fondly remember him not just for his great athletic leadership but also for his sincerity and love of his family and friends. Wishing you all Gods power and love in this difficult time.

Dear Debbie, Margo and Alex,

I will never forget the year your Dad coached the Blue Jays for the Newton West Little League along with Frank and Tony, while Debbie, Donna, Sandy, me, and so many others helped out in the snack stand. We had a ball that spring and winning the City Series was the topping on the cake! We will always thank Steve for bringing us into the NWLL family. Working with him and league were some of the best times of our life. We will never forget his love of the game. He will be sorely missed.

I do not know Steve's wife and children, but I knew Steve (and Bruce) from fond memories of high school days (Ah, Those Were The Days!).
Reading the other "guest book" entries inspired me to add my own thoughts, in case others reading were unaware of the impact Steve had on everyone who ever played sports (and attended High School) with him.
Steve was a wonderful person and a superior athelete. He was an ideal teammate. His nickname "Herc" speaks volumes. My brother John once said "when Steve hit a pile (as in a football tackle; supreme linebacker that he was), the entire pile would move in the direction of and equal to the amount of Steve's hit" Newton (the mathematician) would be impressed. Newton (the town) was also, and will truely miss him.
To call him a wonderful person and a superior athelete is an understatement. Certainly one of NNHS's 10 best of all time (anyone in charge of the NNHS sports "hall of fame" listening?)
I've never heard a bad word spoken about Steve (how many people do you know that you can say that about?)
A loss such as this is tragic.
Prayers and condolences to his loved ones.

Dear Debbie & family,

Although I have not known Steve too long..I do know that he was a very caring & loving man. I also know that he was a great father and husband. I am extremely sorry to hear about your loss. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

I have only known Steve for a few years, but if I had to say I had a handful of friends (co-workers) Steve would definelty be at the top of list who would watch your back. Steve was the kind of guy who saw you everyday would say hello, give you a hug (if you weren't a guy). He will be missed by all of us, men & wiomen at the USPS. THE RAIN STORM TODAY WAS A BIG REALITY FOR ME, "TEARS FROM HEAVEN". A good, good man has left before us, why?? I ask myself. I do not have the answer. He was an angel on earth, and now he has wings. I heard the song, "Spirit in the Sky" today, and I will always remember my friend, Steve, for he was a great man.

Dear Debbie,
I just heard about Steve and I am in total shock, there are no words to describe what I feel. I remember you back in high school always carrying that torch for Steve. Hanging out on the Adams House stairs where Steve was. It is funny, you know how I heard about Steve's passing? Doc. He just told Bobby and Bobby called me immediately. I wish there was something I could say to you to make it easier, but there are no words. You had a wonderful husband, who loved you and the kids very much. If you need anything, anything, please call, we are here 24/7.
Alex, Bobby was so upset when he heard the news, he called me right away and could barely get the words out of his mouth. He said how he had just seen you last week down Cherry Street and everything was fine. He wants you to know that he is here for you, if there is anything you need or he or any of us can do, please do not hestitate. You have a lot of memories and you had a great dad that I am sure you are very proud of, he was loved by all. Your mom and Margo are going to need you now, God Bless all of you.
With all our love and prayers to Debbie, Alex and Margo.

Just hours before I learned of Steve's untimely passing, I ironically thought of Steve as I walked past "Angelo's and Elsie's", which was what we called his parents store back in the day. It was seconds from my house, which is how I met Steve, Bruce and his mom and dad. The times at the store. The endless games of baseball at Our Lady's parking lot. Great childhood memories, and Steve was a big part. He'll be missed. Rest in peace, my old friend.

Dear Debbie and Family,

I was devastated when I arrived
to work at the Post Office Garage
yesterday and learned about Steve's passing.

The whole workplace just came to life
when Steve arrived every morning. He was much loved by all of his co-workers. He was a big teddy bear of
a guy and I just loved hearing his
stories and jokes. He was very popular and people just gravitated towards him.

I will miss him terribly. He was a bright spot in my day.

Dear Debbie and family,
There are so many memories I've had growing up with Steve, but this one sticks in my mind. One of the biggest playoff games we had in Lincoln Park in Waban. He was pitching and I was the catcher.I didn't have a cup that day, Steve said don't worry about it mush, just put a sock in it. I did. He still broke my balls that day. I'll never forget his leadership as a great friend and as an older brother. I think I can say that about everyone that knew you !! We will miss you dearly!!!Phil Reddy and family
