Dorothy Brockway Longo

Dorothy Longo Obituary

Age 90, of Wrentham, July 26, 2008. Wife of the late Dr. Vincent F. Longo, she is survived by her children, Vincent F. Longo, Jr. of Southbury, CT, Marion Longo and husband Frank Garrison of Medfield, and George Longo and partner Henry Chace of Meredith NH and Boston, and two grandchildren, Todd and Anna Garrison, also of Medfield. Born in Brooklyn NY, Dorothy graduated from Packer Academy in Brooklyn, Vassar College, and the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center where she received her medical degree and met her husband Vincent Longo. She and her husband set up their first medical practices in Bristol CT, he in internal medicine and she, as Dr. Brockway, in pediatrics. Later the Brockway Longo's would move to Woodbridge CT, and Dr. Brockway received her master's degree in Public Health from Yale University. She served for many years as the Director of the Quinnipiac Health District in Connecticut. A lifelong summer resident of the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, Dorothy entertained her family and friends at her home in Laconia on Lake Winnisquam. Dorothy moved from Connecticut to Fox Hill Village in Westwood in 1997, where she continued her avid interest in bridge, politics and life long learning. She recently moved to the Pond Home in Wrentham. Dorothy will be remembered fondly by her family and friends for her insightful intelligence, her quick wit, her love of reading, the game of bridge and her love for her home in New Hampshire. Every year she was the first in summer to dive into Lake Winnisquam for her daily swim which she continued to do until the age of 87. A Memorial Service will be held at the family plot at her summer home in Laconia sometime in the autumn. Donations may be made in Dorothy's memory to The Gordon Nash Library, 69 Main St., New Hampton NH 03256. The Gordon Nash Library is the only free, full service New Hampshire Library supported by its endowment and the donations of patrons and friends of the library. The donation is fully tax deductible. George, Vincent & Marion,

I have just belatedly learned, with much sadness, about your mother's passing. I regret having lost touch with her over the years. She was a great inspiration for me and I am honored to have worked with her for many years as her Deputy at the Quniinpiack Valley Health District. She was an amazing person, full of enthusiasm, wit and energy. Above all, she was a person of great integrity and loving heart. Again, I am honored to have known her as a colleague, mentor, friend and--of course--fellow lover of Maine Coon cats (which I still have today).

We will all miss Dorothy at the lake, on the side of the court, and chatting dockside about all the wonderful ideas she held with great passion. I especially will miss the continual debate she engaged us in to be better citizens and trustees of this world. Thank you for being a part of my life.
