Lester Eugene Phillips

Went home to be with the Lord on August 2, 2008, in Plymouth, MA at the age of 85 with his family by his side. Born in Somerville, MA on January 5, 1923, he was a 1941 graduate of Somerville High School; he attended Tufts College in Medford, CT. A proud member of the greatest generation of WWII, he served in the South Pacific and fought in the Battle of Okinawa. He was a member of both the 54th Naval Division and 6th Marine Division for three years serving as a Pharmacist Mate First Class. Lester was an active member of the VFW Post 1822 in Plymouth serving as a member of the board of directors. His business career spanned 40 years as a retail executive beginning in Boston and culminating at Kline Brothers Department Stores in New York City. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-eight years, Madelyn Glendon Phillips of Plymouth, a daughter Cheryl Doherty of Plymouth, and two sons, Thomas Phillips of Glastonbury, CT, and Gerard Phillips of Milford, CT, eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a brother Robert Phillips of Framingham. The funeral will take place on Wednesday morning, August 6th at 9:00 a.m. from the Cartmell Funeral Home, 150 Court St., PLYMOUTH followed by a mass of Christian Burial at the Church of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha in West Plymouth at 10: 00 a.m. Internment with full military honors to follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. Friends and relatives may call at Cartmell Funeral Home in Plymouth from 4:00pm to 7:00pm on Tuesday, August 5th.
