Davela Birnbaum Obituary

Born 3/6/25, died 7/23/08 in San Diego, CA. "Davi" led a full and inspirational life. She attended NYU, where she met her husband Leon, who passed away in 1996. She was a lifelong activist. In the 1960's, with fellow members of The Voice of Women, she marched for civil rights and organized peace protests. In the 1970s, she turned her attentions to educating women on health matters, serving as one of the contributing authors for the landmark book: "Our Bodies, Ourselves". She was an avid reader and music connoisseur, introducing her children to the likes of The Who and Santana before they were household names. She loved to have fun and to travel, both evidenced in her guide, published in 1967: "A Groovy Trip To Mexico". She is survived by daughter, Susan Kwasnick of Newton, MA son Adam of Oceanside, CA and by grandchildren Mary, Ben, Emily and Liz who thought that that Grandma was pretty cool. We will all miss her loving support and her mischievous grin. Donations are suggested to the Boston-based organization: "Today's Girls, Tomorrow's Leader, at the United Way, www.supportunitedway.org.

I will always remember Davi as a person who was so skilled in loving people around her. She was the best at helping people have faith in themselves, she celebrated our triumphs and offered a soft place to land when times were bad. She was a tireless promoter of human rights. I personally will always remember the wonderful friendship she offered me with her big heart which had no bottom. Her love of the arts, humor and adventure. I am not sure about afterlife but I hope she and Leon are somehow joined in laughter floating on a big cloud or riding on a comet's tail with the cosmic winds streaming past them, screaming with delight. Good night dear friend, Davi
