Pearl Hurwitz Obituary

Of Melrose and Margate, FL, peacefully Entered Into Rest on Monday, August 11, 2008 at Woodbridge Legacy in Peabody, after a lengthy illness. She was the wife of the late Lester Hurwitz, with whom she shared over fifty years of marriage. She was born in Worcester, MA, daughter of the late Hyman and Rebecca (Griff) Goldsmith. She was educated and graduated from the Worcester Public Schools and graduated from high school there. Pearl was proud of her W.W. II service in the US Navy Waves, serving from 1944-1946, locally and in NY and Washington. Following her military service, Pearl and her husband Lester settled in Melrose and owned and operated The House of Hurwitz on Washington Street in downtown Boston, a local landmark for over 40 years, selling jewelry, electronics, toys, novelties, and balloons. Pearl was a member and long-time supporter of Temple Beth Shalom in Melrose. She was a master bridge player. Pearl will be dearly missed by her family and friends, and especially her fellow residents and loving caregivers in Legacy III in Woodbridge. She is survived by her granddaughter, Shayna R. Lutz and great-grandson Nicholas Lutz Wooden of New Jersey; son-in-law Steven Malc of New Jersey; sister, Helen Marcus of Jamaica Plain; nephew Chester Marcus and his wife Deborah of Gloucester, Pearl's legal guardian and care coordinators in her last two years; stepdaughter, Phyllis Molliken; step-grand children Steven Hurwitz, Greg Hurwitz, Jennifer Hurwitz, Sherri Willets, Terry Nolan, Michelle Silver, Jill Molliken, and several step-great-grandchildren; nieces Ellen Bick, Judy Savageau, Paula Goldsmith & Lisa Oslowski, nephews Paul Marcus, Peter Griff, Harry Griff, Howard Segal, & Robert Segal; several grand-nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband Lester, Pearl was predeceased by her daughter Susan (Hurwitz) Lutz Malc; siblings Irene Segal, Dorothy Griff, Arlene Franks, and Morris Goldsmith & stepson Harvey Hurwitz. Graveside Services at Kaminker Cemetery, 776 Baker St., West Roxbury on Friday, August 15, 2008 at 11 AM. Memorial Observance at her late residence on Sunday, August 17 at 7 PM. Expressions of sympathy can be made in her memory to the Temple Beth Shalom Building Fund, 21 East Foster St., Melrose, MA 02176 or a favorite charity of one's choice. Truly the end of an era. I shall never forget Susan, my dear friend, and her mother, Pearl, as we traveled through elementary, junior and senior high school together. The Hurwitz Family is in my prayers always.
