Winifred McCarthy Obituary

91, of Whitman and Marshfield, died peacefully on August 12th, at the South East Rehabilitation & Skilled Nursing Center in Easton, after a period of failing health. She was the beloved wife of the late Francis B. McCarthy and loving mother of Francis B. McCarthy of Pittsburgh, PA, Laurie Kelleher of Quincy and Anne K. Sullivan of Whitman, her sister Katherine Canavan of Texas. She will be very much missed by her four grandchildren, Rebecca Marshall of Whitman, Katherine Sullivan of Whitman, Jack McCarthy of Georgia and Mark Sullivan of Orlando, FL, and her great-granddaughter Corinne Gary of Whitman. She was also the sister of the late William Blakeman and Jeanne Geornares. Mrs. McCarthy was a 1935 graduate of Whitman High School and received an undergraduate degree from Boston University in 1939. The next year in 1940, Mrs. McCarthy received a graduate degree from Boston University. She was a respected business teacher at Whitman-Hanson Regional High School and even many years after her retirement in 1981, her former students still often recalled how well she prepared them for the business world. Mrs. McCarthy was a devout parishioner of the Holy Ghost Church in Whitman and member of the Whitman Women's club and the Whitman Reading Circle. Her funeral services will be held Saturday, August 16th at 9:15 from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rt. 58 at the rotary) WHITMAN, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00AM in the Holy Ghost Church, Whitman. Interment will follow in the St. Patrick's Cemetery, Rockland. Visiting hours will be held Friday, August 15th from 3:00-7:00PM. I was sorry to hear about Mrs. McCarthy's passing. She was always a warm and welcoming neighbor on Monitor Road. I enjoyed her company.

I am sorry to hear about your loss. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family. Ms. McCarthy was my business teacher in HS back in 1976. I have thought of her from time to time over the years. She had a way of making teaching fun.
