A Cousin Laments the Fractured Circle

It is tough to convey how much Dr. Robert Spector's persona enhanced the family circle. As a cousin-in-law entering the family around the same time that Robert's wonderful wife Charlotte did, I have a special perspective, up-close and amazed. It was not just the lovely music that he wrote for his wife to celebrate their marriage, or the piece that he wrote and performed to salute his parents on their fiftieth wedding anniversary, or those that he wrote for Charlotte's sixtieth birthday, and their own golden wedding celebration. It was not just the multiple historical novels he wrote for young adults, the numerous erudite articles he wrote for academic publications, or even his masterful research and insightful writings on the history of holocausts in WORLD WITHOUT CIVILIZATION. But they go a long way towards showing his gifts. And there is much more.

Family gatherings were always more fun when Robert was there. A tease from the start, his great sense of humor and armory of jokes seasoned the occasion, further heightened by his wry, contagious grin. Legal arguments, philosophical discussions, political positions, Robert was verbally slugging away with the best; it was his oxygen.

Robert's passion for knowledge defined his life. It was surely what drove his never-ending thirst to learn and pass it on. While working on his music degree he decided to earn a degree in Education, and then in Literature and History, followed by an advanced degree in Education, and ultimately a Doctor of Law, teaching all the while. The diploma collection made an attractive if expensive and unique wall papering. We would hear about these on-going accomplishments from Robert's Mother via her sister, my husband's Mother. The day that he became a Professor, we almost did not need a phone - the Mountain had been scaled, the American Dream was real. Yes the family had doctors, lawyers, engineers, computer wizards, teachers, nurses, and all good ones, too. But no Professor, until now, Robert, and a superior one as well. All the decades that he taught, he not only went to the Mountain but took all of us, his family, his students, and his friends with him. This is surely the given of superlative teaching, the Professor keeps learning, keeps passing it on, and the wisdom keeps resonating even after the Professor is silent.

Memories help describe Robert's enhancement of the family circle, but how marred that circle is without him defies description. Generous of spirit, brilliant of mind, in love with his wife, sons, their wives and children, Robert Spector taught us his great lesson in everything he did. His example is inspiring; his life was a blessing.

We will always remember him with love.

I am fortunate enough to have been one of Dr. Spector's students at Worcester State College, and I will never forget the depth of his knowledge he possessed of American Colonial History, as well as his passion for Law.

Every day I try to share the passion that Dr. Spector had for history with my own students, and I know that my happy memories of Dr. Spector in the lecture halls of Worcester State will live with me forever.

He was a rare gentleman- God Bless Him.

He once said that he would give any person an A in his class if they threw a brick through the classroom window in protest of something. If they did that then they would have truly understood what he was trying to teach us.

I remember Dr. Spector as Principal of the Jewish Community Religious School. I was a 10 year old student at the time, yet I can picture him so clearly in my mind. He wanted so much for us to achieve. I will miss his dedication as an educator.

My most sincere condolences. As a former student of Dr. Spector (very early 1970's) I proudly admit that his scholarship and classroom passion for his subject inspired me to the point that many of my own classroom "traits" were modelled after and upon his. Thank you Dr. Spector for your contributions to my professional life.

Bob was a friend and colleague. He taught for me at Temple Shalom in Newton and was enthusiastic in everything that he did. I later worked with him on a project institue at Worcester State. His example of interest in all the things around him should be a model for his family. He loved to go to American Civil War battlegrounds and study them on site.....He will be missed but his memory will live on in the hearts and minds of all who knew him. He was one of the most thought provoking teachers I ever had. Many of the quests I began in the knowledge quest grew out of information I first learned about in his classroom. He started me on a wonderful journey into world history.
