Uncle, Father and Brother NIFON

Had I Had more space, I would have written tens of pages, but since the space is limited, I am going to sum up what cannot be summed up. The late Nifon left Syria shortly before I was born in 1953. When I was born and was growing up in the family’s home in Bahhour, Uncle Nifon was always present in our gatherings, weddings and funerals because his name was always there, though he was away only physically. Uncle Nifon never retuned to Syria not out of lack of homesickness for his family or lack of love for his family. My uncle Nifon was a loving man, very emotional and would identify with every member of his family and every member in Bahhour, his village . He used to write many letters to people, encouraging a student of congratulating another on his/her academic achievement, condoling bereaved people, congratulating married couples, asking after ill people, giving news about himself or the Syrian community in Norwood or Boston or in other places. He was so generous that he used to help many people financially.
I visited him twice in Norwood in 1978-1995, and spent with him a few months, We always sat together, and enjoyed our conversations, because he was an excellent and wide read conversationalist , very precise about details, and enquiring about all = young and old people, and everything Whenever I insisted on inviting him back to Syria, he always declared that he is too emotional to face the moment of reuniting with his family, that is, he thinks that his reunion with family may lead to his death because of his excessive emotions, homesickness, long absence during which he has been missing his family, friends and acquaintances.
The death of his son George in 1978 was a major setback in his life because George his only son, was a learned, widely – read, courageous or rather a heroic youth. His son’s death left a gap in his life which was never bridged all his lifetime.
My uncle greatly loved his wife Afifi and his daughter Mona and her family, his reminiscent conversations about them. My uncle Nifon was a loyal son to his parents, a sincere brother to his brother and sisters, a wonderful uncle to his nephews and nieces. He was a genuine friend to his flock in Bahhour.

We, his family, all the family, together with all relatives and friends, were shocked and stunned by the news of his death. Our shock was so great, bitter, heart-felt and heart-rending. We missed him so much, so we mourned him with both tears and grave sadness, and we will remember him for all the years to come because his death made us feel the greatest loss ever. His death made us feel that we missed one of the dearest and most respected brothers, uncles and friends.
So, rest in peace you who were a noble man who is a kin to holy saints.

I am bitterly disappointed that I did not hear about my beloved teacher Fr. Nifon's passing until now and that I was unable to pay my respects properly. What a wonderful and inspirational man. May his memory be eternal!

Father was "my" priest, "my" spiritual arm, "my" unconditional human love, yes, "my" proud branch in this Tree of Life. I miss his voice, yet I hear the choir "above" sounding magnificent since His arrival.

My heartfelt sympathy and friendship.

What a tremendous loss. There are no words to convey what his passing means - it is the end of an era. And many of us feel utterly bereft at his passing. My memories of Father Nifon are many as he was, really, the singular spiritual leader of my growing up and my adult life.

My family is so grateful that he attended my father's 90th birthday celebration in May, both to lead us in prayer and as a long-time family friend and spirtual adviser.

May he rest in peace.

Sincerely,
Karen Elias
