Judith Freedman Obituary

Age 59, died peacefully of lung cancer at home in New York City. She is survived by her husband, George Schwartz, daughter Sarah Schwartz, sister Deborah Naveira and her parents Ruth and George Freedman of Wayland, MA. She graduated from Wayland High School, Class of 1966. She received her BA from Clark University and graduate degrees from the University of Massachusetts and Simmons College; she also received a certificate in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy from the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health and was a practicing therapist and analyst in New York City Judy was interviewed for the PBS television show, The Newshour with Jim Lehrer, concerning end-of-life medical care. Near the end of her own life, Judy was an articulate spokesperson for palliative medicine when conventional treatments became ineffective as well as for the calm and dignity of hospice care at home. She was an avid reader of fiction and poetry, and selected the five poems read at her funeral by close friends. She was an active member of several book clubs including one for the psychotherapists and another for mothers and daughters reading together. Judy loved her family and enjoyed her many friends and professional associates in NYC and around the country. Donations may be made in her honor to the Lung Cancer Alliance, P.O.
