Edward Long Obituary

An avid naturalist and photographer, died at his home on Sunday, August 24th at the age of 87. His beloved wife and five children were with him at the time of his passing. He was cherished by them, as well as his grandchildren and friends, for his abiding sense of humor and adventure, his passion for the outdoors and the generosity of his spirit. He taught them all about loving and living. Ed was born in 1920 in Boston and grew up on Beacon Hill and the Back Bay. He graduated from Milton Academy, where he rowed for the varsity team, a sport he would continue throughout his life. Later, he attended Harvard University. After college he joined the Navy, serving as a mechanic of PBYs during WWII. He worked as a hydraulics specialist at the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy before entering a long, successful career as an investment broker. His achievements as a company vice president were recognized by Merrill Lynch with the creation of a Man of the Year award in his honor. A philanthropist and fund-raiser for numerous charitable causes, Ed was passionate about protection of the environment. He was a director of the Mass. Audubon Society, co-founder of the Cohasset Conservation Land Trust, and a member of the Trustees of Reservations. He was instrumental in local campaigns to preserve open space, including World's End in Hingham, Bassin's Beach in Cohasset and other nature preserves where he walked with his children and grandchildren, and always his dogs. He documented their beauty in his acclaimed photographs. His achievements as a nature photographer were recognized at a juried exhibition for the Mass. Audubon Society. He is survived by his wife, Priscilla Hastings Long; his five children, Edward Long Redpath, William Bowditch Long, Lydia Long, Diana Long Sweitzer and Andrew Hastings Long; and 11 grandchildren. A memorial service will be announced and held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name may be made to the Cohasset Conservation Land Trust, P.O. Box 314, Cohasset, 02025.

Hi, I met Bill while walking with dogs at Wheelwright Park, and I asked how Dad was. He had passed on the night before...I'm thinking of all of you, and hoping all your love and memories will carry you through the sadness. Love, Terri

Mr. Long,
Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served with the USN during WW II as a mechanic working on PBY "Catalina" flying boats and for being a member of the Greatest Generation. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
