September 17, 1923 - August 19, 2008 George Edward Morgan died in Lake Oswego, OR from complications of Lymphoma and Alzheimers Disease August 19, 2008. He was born September 17, 1923 in Malden, MA. He was the eldest son of the late Henry A. and Ruth W. Morgan, and was the brother of Edith L. Morgan, Christine H. Bromley, and Henry A. Morgan Jr. who all predeceased him. He is survived by his brother Arthur W. Morgan. George was raised in Wakefield, MA and graduated from Wakefield High School. He attended Amherst and Dartmouth Colleges, graduating from the latter in 1946 after serving in the US Marine Corps during World War II. In youth, he spent many happy summers in Gloucester, MA. Building stone walls and delivering milk were some of his methods of earning money for college. He moved to Fullerton, CA, a city founded by his great uncles. He subsequently moved to Palo Alto, CA and enrolled at Stanford University where he received a Masters degree in 1948. Following a two-year teaching assignment at the Cate School (the Santa Barbara School for Boys) in Carpinteria, CA, he received a Coro Foundation fellowship in Municipal Affairs. In 1950 he launched a career in local government with the City of San Francisco and as an intern with the City of Palo Alto, CA. There he began a twenty-one-year relationship with the City of Palo Alto, progressing from administrative assistant, to assistant city manager and, during his last six years of service, to City Manager. In 1971, Mr. Morgan left Palo Alto to become the first City Manager of Beverly Hills, CA, serving seven years in that capacity. Subsequent local government assignments included service as County Administrator of Lane County, OR and City Manager of Gainesville, FL. Retiring from full-time management positions, he enjoyed a number of interim administrative assignments with Washington County, King City and Grants Pass, OR. More recently, as a resident of Tigard, OR, he served as a commissioner for the Tigard Water District and was for a number of years actively involved in many programs for senior citizens. He was a member of the Calvin Presbyterian Church in Tigard, OR. His passions were walking, gardening, and community service, with his greatest focus being on family. Mr. Morgan married Louise Dickson, also a native from Massachusetts, in 1947 at the Stanford chapel in Palo Alto, CA. She died December 2006, a few months before their sixtieth anniversary. Survivors include his one brother, Arthur W. Morgan of New Port Richey, FL; his three daughters and their husbands: Beth M. Knudsen (Eric), Martha E. Morgan, Nancy M. Jensen (Dan); four grandchildren: Jena and Lara Knudsen, Ann and Danny Jensen, and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the loving staff of The Pearl at Kruse Way and Signature Hospice for their support and the wonderful care they offered our father. In lieu of flowers, we would request that remembrances be sent to the Alzheimers Association, Guide Dogs for the Blind or the Salvation Army. A private service for the family has been held.
