Aunt Phoebe was always the spark plug of any Stone family gathering. "Shorty" to my father, she revelled in parties, men, romance, sailing and fishing. I will never forget a cool grey October day when Ben Stone, Dick Gilbane and I sailed into the Thorofare and were thrilled to see smoke coming from her chimney that late in the season. We were in our younger 20's at the time. On going ashore we were surprised to find her watching football and I asked if she enjoyed it. "Hell no" was her response, "Let's have a party". Leaving the dock six or seven hours later, Dick commented that he would ask her to marry if there wasn't a 45 year age differential.
We were please to name our daughter after her and to have that link through her non-Stone years.
