To Doug's Family & Friends,
We just heard the sad news about Doug. We have known Doug from the Wayside for over 30 yrs. He always had great stories of his adventures to tell us. He always asked for my parents, in which Dad, now 92, celibrated his birthday at the Inn and Doug gave him the Longfellow Tales of the Wayside Inn as a personal gift. We will cherish it always, in his honor. We greatly miss him now, and forever.
Peace,
Fran & Deb Zarette

I am so sorry to hear of my best friend Doug. He and I go away back at the great parties we use to have for the VIP's visiting the US Army Natick Laboratories.

Doug always greeted me and we would spin a few incidents together. Doug will be missed by not only me but many.

My prayers are with him.
God Bless

To everyone,

If you knew Doug, you know he was one of the kindest, most thoughtful and decent of human beings you had ever had the privilege to meet. He always had a laugh and a smile for everyone, and his creation of the trout pond at Wayside Inn, where children could learn to fly fish, was just an example of his desire to "give" to others. He wanted people to embrace life, joy, and to be an active participant in the world.

Doug and I knew each other for years, because I often came to the Inn to have lunch with my friend Dave. We'd then retire to the Old Bar to visit with Doug, and I have many warm and wonderful memories of our time there with him. He brought that old Inn to life. He was the spirit of the Inn and it will never be quite the same now that he is gone.

When my friend Dave succumbed to brain cancer a year ago April, it was Doug who reminded me that what mattered was the wonderful times we shared, and the memories made. He said we should never be sad, but remember our friends with laughter and smiles. He chipped in half to put a bench out by the trout pond for my friend. It touched me that he did so.

When I heard that Doug was diagnosed with the same terrible disease I was devastated. He called me and reprimanded me, reminding me to be happy for all the great times we shared.

Doug's friendship was a gift. I know I will miss him terribly, but I know I will go to the Inn and stand by his pond now and again to say hello......and just to check in.

To Doug's Family,
My mother was a frequent visitor to the Inn along with her "Boyfriend" Dan Crowley(RIP at 95 in 2000). Although my mother hadn't been there for many years, I took her to lunch there last year and Doug greeted her with open arms, brought us to the pond which he seemed very proud of, and spent as much time with her as he could without neglecting his duties at the Inn. His attention and genuine happiness at seeing my mother was much appreciated by us.
My mother read of his passing in the Globe and shared it with me. We are profoundly sad for your loss. My mother lost her son ( my brother) very suddenly in 2005. He was 45. We know your pain. The world has certainly lost a kind and gentle soul.
May your wonderful memories of Doug sustain you during this most difficult time.
With love,
Maureen McCarthy Atkins
Mary E. McCarthy (Doug's friend)

His kindness and sincerity to all was never ending. Memories of his smiling eyes as he embraced most he came in contact with will always remain with me. Hello, my friend, is what he would say.
His kindness and friendship touched my heart and soul, and for that I am truly grateful.
