Thomas Murphy Obituary

MURPHY, Thomas E. Jr. Of Hyannis, 78 died at Cape Cod Hospital September 15, 2008. Born in Boston, the son of Hildreth and Thomas E. Murphy Sr., he graduated from Boston English High and received his BSBA and MBA from Northeastern University. Additionally, he rose to the rank of Captain in the Air National Guard. He began his career in sales at John Hancock and later joined GTE Sylvania where he rose to the position of Human Resources Director. He worked in a similar role at Honeywell and completed his career as the Senior Vice President of Human Resources Shawmut Bank Corp based in Worcester, MA. During his career he was a great supporter of the United Way. He and his wife Janet relocated to Cape Cod after his retirement from Shawmut Bank. Upon his retirement, he spent much of his time initially caring for his mother and aunt. A devoted family man, he loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren. He was an avid reader, a student of history, and he remained active with the Northeastern University Alumni Association. He is survived by his beloved wife Janet of 48 years. He is also survived by his two sons, Christopher T. Murphy and his wife Gretchen of Worcester, and Stephen B. Murphy and his wife Anne of Auburndale, FL. In addition, he leaves four grandchildren, Kristen Murphy, Ryan E. Murphy, Adam Maddox and Edgar Martin. Calling hours will be Sunday September 21 from 4pm to 8pm at the Doane Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 160 W. Main Street Hyannis, MA. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, September 22 at 10am at the Saint Francis Xavier Church, South St. Hyannis, MA. Interment will be at the Oak Neck Cemetery in Hyannis. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Cancer Society 1115 W. Chestnut St. Brockton, MA 02401, the United Way or to the charity of one's choice.
