Congressman, Patrice and Family,

Like many who have become aquainted with the extended Tierney family through John's campaigns, I am saddened to hear of Mrs. Tierney's passing. I would like to extend my sympathy to you as you mourn this terrible loss.

Also, like many, I cannot help feeling uplifted when I think of stuffing envelopes at the Peabody headquarters in 1996 with Mr. and Mrs. Tierney. Their warmth and humor endeared them to me and others, as much as we were excited about the election. In each campaign thereafter, you always got sincere greeting and a thanks from her, and a feeling of connection to her son's success.

I hope you will find comfort during this difficult moment.

Dear John & Patrice, Cathy & Dave, Marty, and Roy,

I know everyone is still reeling from Doris' unexpected and inexplicable passing, and my heart goes out to you for this sudden and painful loss.

My having shared such an intimate experience in your family's life, I feel as if I have become magically woven into the cloth of your clan.

In return, I would like to convey (privately, by letter) a few memorable reflections that capture for me the capricious spirit of this wonderful woman whom I was privileged to have known.

For now, I offer my brief eulogy:

My Dear Doris,

I miss your spunk and your pragmatic attitude -- quite the role model for aging with grace! I am especially saddened by the absence of your candid stories about how you made your way in this world.

Doris, you came briefly into my life....but left a lasting impression!

Fondly, Your Friend & Companion, Kate.
