John Black Obituary

BLACK, The Honorable John Wm., III 67, passed Thursday, October 02, 2008 in Brownsville, Texas. He is preceded in death by his father, William Henry Black and mother, Kathryn Schachte Black. Judge Black is survived by his loving wife, Melissa G. Black; son, William Rafael Black of Brownsville, TX; daughters, Sara C. Black (Donald) of Galveston, TX. and Kiley Hall (Michael) of Andrews, TX; granddaughter, Jordyn Hall and sidekick of 42 years, Paula Tamayo; sisters, Ann Black (Nik), Margaret Black (Richard), and Kiley Black. Judge Black was born in Cambridge, Mass. on December 8, 1940. He graduated from The College of William and Mary in 1962 and The University of Texas School of Law in 1965. He entered the private practice of law in Brownsville in April, 1965 and was sworn in as a United States Magistrate Judge September 18, 1992. Visitation were held from 5:30 pm to7:00 pm with a prayer service from 7pm to 8pm Friday, October 3, 2008 at The Episcopal Day School, 34 N. Coria. Funeral mass was celebrated at 10am Saturday, October 4, 2008 at The Episcopal Day School. Entombment will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park Mausoleum. Serving as pallbearers will be Eduardo Roberto Rodriguez, Dr. Danilo Asase, Jeffrey D. Roerig, Michael Hall, Ed Stapleton and Donald Langford. Honorary pallbearers will be The Honorable Hilda Tagle, The Honorable Andrew S. Hanen, The Honorable Felix Recio, Linda Garcia, Irma Soto, Butch Barbosa, Dr. Jose Kuri, John McAllen Scanlan, Russell Hagy, Cameron County Bar Assoc., and all former law clerks. A special thanks to Dr. Danilo Asase, South Texas Rehabilitation Hospital, M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Texas Oncology -Brownsville, Dr. Balesh Sharma, Spanish Meadows, Dr. Francis Gumbel, and Valley Regional Hospital. A very special Thanks to Father Richard Aguilar, Rev. Charles Sharrow, Episcopal Day School family and Sharon Putegnat.

I found John Black to be a very good lawyer and latter in time, an excellant trial judge. He was honorable and always respectfull. Importantly, he never forgot that he was first a lawyer and then a judge. He will surely be missed. Sincere condolences to his loving family and many dear friends.
