Donald Lindsay Obituary

LINDSAY, Donald 86. Cherished husband of 65 years of Dorothy (Breck) Lindsay, died peacefully Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008 at Walden Rehabilitation Center in Concord, after a lengthy illness, surrounded by his family. Don was born to Methodist Missionary, Norman Lindsay and his wife Ruby on December 12th, 1921 in Algiers, Algeria. He grew up in an English speaking Christian home in a Muslim, French speaking world, experiences which underlay his beliefs in social acceptance and equality of all people. Don graduated from Middleboro High School, and attended Wesleyan College in Connecticut, where he enriched his talents in art, music and theater. In 1943, he married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Breck, and days later left to serve in the Army Air Corps. After the war, Don returned to Wesleyan on the GI Bill as a chemistry major. He graduated in 1948 and worked at Tracerlab in Cambridge, moving to Lexington in 1949. After working at the US Air Force Cambridge Research Center and MIT Lincoln Labs, he began a nearly 30 year career at Arthur D. Little Inc. in Cambridge, leading the analytical chemistry department, and doing research work in nuclear radiation. At home in Lexington, he was a several term representative to Town Meeting, a member of the Masterworks Chorale, and a founder and the leader of the Town Criers, an eight man barbershop group. In later years, the whole family joined the Concord Chorus, inspired by his love of singing. Upon retiring in the mid 1980's, he and Dorothy moved to Haddam Connecticut, returning in 2002 to Burlington, Massachusetts to be closer to the family. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, of Burlington, brother Alan and his wife, Yvonne, of Middleboro, son Mark and his wife, Marty, of Gloucester, daughter Shaylor, of Lexington; two nieces and three grandsons. A Memorial Service is planned for 1 PM Saturday, Nov. 15, at Follen Community Church, 755 Massachusetts Ave., Lexington, MA. For those who wish, contributions in Mr. Lindsay's memory may be made to the Concord Chorus, P.O. Box 171, Concord, MA 01742. Douglass Funeral Home Lexington, 781-862-1800 www.douglassfh.com
