Irving Kanter Obituary

KANTER, Irving Formerly of Lexington, MA, 84, died in his home November 1, 2008 surrounded by his family. He was born October 30, 1924 in NY, NY the son of Samuel & Sarah (Goodman) Kanter. Graduate of Townsend Harris High School he received a BS in Physics from Brooklyn College. Following his service in the U.S. Army he received a PhD in Applied Mathematics from Brown University. He married Gladys (Gol) Ruth in 1941 in Providence, RI. He moved to California and then lived in Moorestown, NJ from 1954 to 1966, working for RCA in Radar Systems. In 1966, he moved to Lexington, MA and worked for Raytheon in the Missile Systems Division. Dr. Kanter had numerous patents and scientific articles and was a fellow of the I.E.E.E. Following retirement he taught mathematics to many young students. Dr. Kanter spent summers in Woodstock in 2004 & 2005 and moved there full time in 2006. He was predeceased by his wife in 2006 to whom he was so devoted. He is survived by his 5 daughters; Lisa Kanter of Littleton, CO. Joan Kanter of Imperial Beach, CA, Susan Doherty of Round Hill, VA, Maggie Shafmaster of Cambridge, MA, and Natalie Kanter of Shirley, MA, 8 grandchildren, a sister May Chariton of Rockville Centre, NY and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the Woodstock (VT) Jewish Community Shirr Shalom on Monday November 3 at 11 AM. In Lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Visiting Nurses and Hospice of VT & NH, P.O. Box 976, White River Jct., VT 05001. Arrangements by Cabot Funeral Home, Woodstock, VT.

Mr. Kanter,
Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served in the U.S. Army during WW II and for being a member of the Greatest Generation. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
