Edward R.F. Sheehan

SHEEHAN, Edward R.F. 78, of Newton died on Nov. 3, 2008. He was a 1952 Boston College graduate, Edward was the beloved son of the late William and Emilie Sheehan. He is survived by his brothers; William, David and his wife Stefanie, Peter and his wife Emily, and sister Clotilde Farrell. He was the uncle of Daniel and David Farrell and many other nieces and nephews. In 1954-56, Edward was a foreign correspondent for the Boston Globe. Then he joined the Foreign Service U.S. diplomat/Middle East and was a press officer in the U.S. Embassy Cairo 1957-58 and a press attaché and assistant cultural officer U.S. Embassy Beirut 1958-61. Edward, an author and journalist, contributed many articles throughout the years on the Middle East, Central America, Ethiopia, Somalia and troubled areas in Africa to the N.Y. Times, Boston Globe, Saturday Evening Post, Harper's Magazine, N.Y. Review of Books and Readers Digest. His books include: The Arabs Israelis and Kissinger, Kingdom of Illusion, The Governor, Agony on the Garden-A Stranger in Central America, Innocent Darkness, and Cardinal Galsworthy. He also wrote a play, Kingdoms, which was produced at the Kennedy Center and on Broadway. He was a Fellow and Research Fellow at the Center for International Affairs at Harvard University and founded and chaired the Middle East Seminar at the (Weatherhead) Center for International Affairs. He lectured extensively on the Middle East in the U.S., Europe and the Middle East. Visiting hours for Edward will be held in the Eaton & Mackay Funeral Home, 465 Centre St., NEWTON CORNER, on Tues., Nov. 11 from 4-7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Church, 1321 Centre St., Newton Centre at 11 AM on Wed., Nov 12. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery.
