In 1996 I was the General Agent for New England Life in Richmond, Virginia and received a call from a gentleman who identified himself as Abram Collier. He continued that I probably didn't know who he was and that he was a former President of New England Life. I informed him that I knew exactly who he was and had, in fact, read his book about New England Life. He really seemed surprised by that! We had a long conversation about history in general and New England Life in particular. He was calling to ask a favor which was for me to buy and deliver a gift to an attorney friend of his in Richmond who had represented him in an issue with The Homestead. We struck a deal after that great conversation that I would do so only if he would not reimburse me but instead send me an autographed copy of "A Capital Ship." When his friend informed him of the receipt of the gift Mr. Collier sent me a letter thanking me with a check for what he assumed the cost to be attached. The letter gave instructions that the autographed book would be sent when the cancelled check was received. I relented and soon received the book. I will always remember this delightful interaction with your husband and father.
