Lee Bloom Obituary

BLOOM, Dr. Lee Benjamin Brown Age 67, passed away in Los Angeles early Nov. 22, 2008, from melanoma. He was born December 6, 1940 in Somerville, MA, the son of Dr. Phillip and Ann Bloom. Dr. Bloom attended school at Browne & Nichols College at the University of Chicago and medical school at Tulane University. Upon graduating from medical school, he married his wife Tobie, whom he met in New Orleans. The two moved to NC, where Dr. Bloom did his internship in pediatric medicine at Duke University, and then on to Los Angeles to do his psychiatric residency at UCLA. After completing his residency, Dr. Bloom served as a psychiatrist in the United States Air Force, stationed at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii, and then volunteered for duty in Guam, where he treated U.S. pilots returning from bombing missions during the Vietnam War. After his service he returned to Los Angeles with his family, where he dedicated his professional life to treating chemical dependency and dual diagnosis. Dr. Bloom served as the Medical Director of several prominent psychiatric hospitals, before founding the Pasadena Recovery Center. In PRC, Dr. Bloom nurtured a kind and caring treatment center, treatment the way he had always dreamed of. Dr. Bloom's love of people led him on a journey filled with friends, fun and happiness. He was a caring and loving husband, father, grandfather, doctor and friend. Dr. Bloom lived like there was no tomorrow, danced like nobody was watching, sang like nobody was listening, loved like he would never be hurt and spoke from the heart to be heard. Dr. Bloom is survived by his loving wife Tobie, son Michael Bloom (Clarice), daughter Alison Triessl (Michael), grandchildren Jacob, Carly, Tyler and Jonathan, brother Alan Bloom (Shelley), and many, many friends, family, and patients who will miss him greatly. Yesterday at a psychiatric conference I first heard from a colleague of Lee's untimely death. I am still feeling shocked. As a fellow practicing psychiatrist in the San Fernando Valley I grew to enjoy and respect Lee over the past three decades. He was a gentleman, a jokester, an expert psychiatrist, and a dedicated doctor. He will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Dr. Bloom, I will miss you. I will miss your kindness and your compassion. I will miss your willingness to talk about the most difficult issues. And most of all, I will miss your outlandish sense of humor. In the few short years I’ve known you, you quickly became my teacher. You taught me that who I am is always good enough. You taught me that no matter the challenges I may face in life, persistence will always pay off. And, you taught me that when life throws me the proverbial curve ball, I simply need to grab a bigger bat!

Thank you for allowing me to share a small part of your life.

I had the opportunity of working with Dr. Bloom in several Treatment settings and remember him as a friend, a mentor, and an inspiration to my work in the Chemical Dependency and Dual Diagnosis Fields. To all of his wonderful family I am so sorry for your loss. Maybe, at some point, we can all think of the good Doctor not as "gone" but perhaps just ... "gone on !!!" May your heartache be short-lived and may your wonderful memories of him live within each of your hearts forever.

I was so sorry to hear the sad news about Lee. Although Lee and I probably met only a few times, I often heard about his kindness and accomplishments from my parents and from other Bloom relatives. Please give our condolences to all of his family.
Fondly,
Phyllis Bloom Wilker and family

Dr. Bloom,
Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served with the USAF during the Vietnam War-esepecially when you were at Anderson Air Base on Guam helping to treat our Servicemen. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
