Mary Sweeney Obituary

SWEENEY, Mary Elizabeth RSCJ Former Provincial Superior of the Society of the Sacred Heart, died November 26, 2008 at Teresian House, Albany, NY. She was a member of the Society of the Sacred Heart for 72 years. Born in Rochester, New York, Sister Sweeney was a graduate of Newton College of the Sacred Heart. Sister Sweeney was noted for her financial acumen. She served the Society in financial management and investment throughout her life. She was Treasurer of Newton College of the Sacred Heart and of the United States Province of the Society of the Sacred Heart. She served on the investment committee of the New England Jesuits. She was President of the Newton Country Day School Corporation and a Trustee of Stuart Country Day School in Princeton, New Jersey and Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart. Sister Sweeney lived in retirement at Kenwood Convent of the Sacred Heart, Albany, NY. Sister Sweeney is survived by her sisters Mrs. Anne Sweeney Johantgen of Brockport, New York, and Miss Jean B. Sweeney of Rochester, New York. She was the daughter of Michael Edward Sweeney and Helen Hammond Sweeney and sister of the late Sr. Helen Sweeney, RSCJ. The funeral Mass will be celebrated in Albany. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Thursday, December 11 at 6:00 p.m. at Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart, 785 Centre Street.
