Dr. Young Ho Kim

KIM, Dr. Young Ho 81, formerly of Weston, died at Newton-Wellesley Hospital on November 25, 2008. Young was a devoted husband to Mazie, and a caring father to Stuart and Jonathan. Born in Seoul, Korea, he arrived in the U.S. nearly penniless, and achieved great success as an orthodontist through hard work and dedication. Young received his DDS degree from Seoul National University, Korea (1949), and then completed internships at Seoul National University (1950) and at Forsythe Dental Infirmary in Boston (1953). He completed Clinical Fellowships in Orthodontics at Forsythe (1955) and at the University of Rochester, NY (1957), received his MS from the University of Rochester (1958) and his DMD from Tufts University (1960). He served as a faculty member at the graduate orthodontic programs at the dental schools of Harvard University, Boston University and Tufts University. He was the president of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists, North Atlantic Component (1989-1991). He pioneered a new method for orthodontics called Multiloop Edgewise Arch-Wire (MEAW) Technique, and established a foundation in 1991 to promote this technique called the MEAW Technic and Research Foundation, in which he served as the president until his death. He was a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, and maintained a private practice in Weston and provided the highest quality of orthodontic treatment for over 35 years until his recent retirement. He was a sought-after speaker in the field of orthodontics, and lectured in Asia, Europe and North and South America. He was a great teacher and mentor to several generations of orthodontists worldwide. Along with Korean Princess Yee Pang-Ja, Young started the Myung-Hee Won foundation in 1967, which is a charity for handicapped children in Korea. Currently, over a thousand orthodontists from the U.S., Korea, Japan, Greece, China and other countries around the world are members of this foundation and practice the MEAW technique. Young was a kind, gentle, caring soul, and he always looked for ways to help others. He will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He is survived by his wife, Mazie; his son, Stuart; his daughter-in-law, Anne; and his grandson, Jesse. A memorial service will be held January 10th, 2009 at the First Parish in Weston, MA.
