Irene Ryan Obituary

RYAN, Irene P. (Carr) Died at Harbor House in Hingham Nov. 30, 2008 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Roxbury, she lived many years in South Boston, where the family ran Carr's Variety Store. Many years later Irene & her sister Shirley would relive that experience when they opened Carr's II on Dorchester Ave. As a teenager Irene worked as an usher at the Shubert Theater which began a lifelong interest in the theater. Irene was a proud American who loved her country & politics; she was a great admirer of FDR & the new deal. A lifelong Democrat, Irene was keenly interested in world affairs & always believed that government should use its power to be a force for good in the world. For many years Irene worked at UMass Boston, from its humble days in the old Boston Gas Co. building to the sprawling campus at Columbia Point. She loved working with young people & forged life long friendships with many students. Irene was passionate about education & encouraged all of her children & grandchildren to reach their potential. Perhaps more than anything, Irene loved to spend time with her family & friends at her house overlooking Cape Cod Bay in Eastham. Building that house was her passion & she relished time spent there for graduations, summer vacations, holidays & just relaxing. We have lost our mother but everyone who knew Irene has lost a fiercly loyal & loving friend. She will be missed-Good Night Irene. Beloved wife of the late Michael F. Ryan. Mother of Patrick Ryan of Madison,Wi., Kathleen Ryan & her husband Peter Schneider of Dorchester, Kerry I. & her husband Jeffrey Perkins of Hingham, Timothy & his wife Mary Ryan of Quincy, Michael Ryan of Quincy & Christopher & his wife Nancy Ryan of Weymouth. Sister of Shirley Coyne of Hingham & the late Marie Becker. Grandmother of Daniel & Matthew Ryan, Owen, Luke & Maggie Schneider & Michael & Stephanie Perkins. Funeral from the SOUTH WEYMOUTH McDonald Funeral Home, 809 Main St. (Rt.18 opp. South Shore Hospital) Thursday at 9:00 A.M. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Paul's Church, Hingham at 10:00 O'clock. To Irene's Family and friends,

I learned to enjoy Irene's company while attending UMass when CPCS was still in Park Square. She was always ready to help students when they needed advice and she kept the student activities program going. You could drop in at any time for a snack and conversation. She was a very important person in the lives of all of us who knew her well, in school and out. She will be remembered in my prayers.

Irene was a good woman. The one word I associate with her is Respect. She treated others with it and inspired it. She balanced work and family beautifully and interacted with the community with grace and conviction. Irene is not to be mourned, her great spirit is now free to continue its accomplishments. Goodnight Irene indeed.
