Thinking of Miss Drey today, several years after her death. She was my homeroom and Latin teacher when I was a "sixie" at the then all girls school Girls' Latin School... She was a fabulous teacher .. so organized, smart, and kind.. I had the opportunity to call her and speak with her many years later to thank her... I think of her often and all the little acts of kindness she offered such a reviewing a week's worth of Latin with the entire class after I had been out sick for an entire week. You're always in my heart, Ms. Drey!

This condolence to her family, I regret, is untimely. I was inspired by this natural educator, to become a teacher also. She was so effective at Hull High School in her Latin instruction, that I was able to have simple conversations in Latin with her. She was the only teacher who laughted at my teenage jokes. I regret that I lost the Esterbrook pen she gave me. I fondly remember her in that 1958 Ford, she almost gave me a ride in. May she rest in peace, never to be forgotten by yours truly.

I was a student of Miss Drey's at Boston Latin Academy in the late 1970's. She was an amazing teacher and she ran our class like a well oiled machine. She was a no nonsense woman who instilled respect (and a bit of fear I might add) in all of her students. We all thought that she had been a former marine. I LOVED her class and I thought she was so cool because she would speak Latin conversationally in the hallway. She was one of those teachers you never forget. May she rest in peace.

I was a student of Miss Drey's at Boston Latin Academy in the 1980's. I remember her class being very challenging and running very smoothly. Having become a teacher myself, I now recognize and appreciate the organization, dedication, and professionalism she demonstrated daily.
It is wonderful to read the guest book entries and to know that Miss Drey had loved ones and caregivers who were so dedicated to her.

I was one of Miss Drey's caregivers. In the time that I was with her she taught me patience and respect for the individual. She will be missed by myself and my puppy who loved going to visit.

I was one of the caregivers that cared for Gerrtrude in the last year of her life. She was a wonderful, kind and caring individual. She was always so lovely to be with and had so much wisdom to impart. I was not a student of hers but what she taught me i could have never learned in a classroom. I count myself as blessed to have had Gertrude Drey in my life!

I didn't know Gertrude but did know her brother, Thomas Drey, a Guidance Counselor at Malden High School who passed away several years ago. I'm sure that Gertrude, like her brother, Thomas, was a true professional and made a huge difference in the lives of so many students. May they both rest in peace!
Sincerely,

I had Miss Drey for 9th grade Latin
(Caesar and Baker and Ingalls) at Girls' Latin School. She was tough, fair and a very consistently excellent teacher. May she find happiness.

I wish to thank Richard Neal for remembering Gertrude. She is the brilliant woman who taught in Hull High School until she began teaching her first love, Latin, at Latin Academy in Dorchester.
Your letter was touching to me as a friend of Gertrude's and as an old time elementary school teacher at the Memorial School. I had a Neal in my classroom between 1955 & 1959 and I'm sure it was one of your siblings. It might well have been you. I was only 13 years older than the students in my third grade class, my first class.
The funeral today was a real tribute to a great lady. A few former students came and shared fond memories of a truly inspirational person who had an impact on their life decisions.
One former colleague traveled from Maryland to attend the funeral and neighbors and friends attended the Mass and then followed to Blue Hill Cemetery. Gertrude had no living relatives. My sister, Marie, was a friend of Gertrude's from the time they were in their teens, and they remained firm friends until the night Gertrude died. We have lost another of "the greatest generation'.
Thank you for your kind words. You have, indeed, validated how much inspirational teachers impact our lives.

Dear Family Members, It was an honor to serve with Gertrude on the Hull High School faculty, when it opened in 1957. As a no-nonsense teacher, she earned the respect of her students and colleagues. May Gertrude's memory be forever everlasting. Nick Meleones

If this is the "Miss Drey" that taught English at Hull High School in the late 50's, we have indeed lost a jewel. She was tough and demanding but I learned so much from her. May she rest in peace with the knowledge that she had a remarkable impact on this student.

To the Family it is my prayer that your Faith in God will give you strength and your memories of your loved one will give you comfort. Weeping may endure for a night but joy cometh in the morning. Psalm 30:5.
