Peter Agnes Obituary

AGNES, Peter W., Sr. On Dec. 11, 2008, age 82, surrounded by his family, returned to God after a brief illness. Mr. Agnes was the beloved husband of Rita (Galligani). Devoted father of The Honorable Peter, Jr. and his wife Eileen of Wayland, Pamela McMahon and her husband Larry of Reading, Judith Pare of Manchester, NH and her husband Skot and Lisa Radley of Milton and her husband Joe. Brother of John of Everett, Theresa Primrose of Everett, and the late Frank. He also was very devoted to, and proud of, his 8 beautiful grandchildren, Peter, III and his wife Dana, Marita, Christine, Larry, Lisa, Krista, Jack and Jillian and he felt especially blessed to have welcomed 2 great grandchildren, Will and Kaden into his family this year. Mr. Agnes retired in 1991, as a Lieutenant Colonel of the Massachusetts State Police, after a distinguished career as a homicide, auto theft and public corruption investigator, that included assignments in the Offices of Middlesex County District Attorney, John J. Droney, Attorney General Francis X. Bellotti and Governor Michael S. Dukakis. Col. Agnes played a major role in the investigation of corruption and fraud in local and state government building contracts in the late 1970's. His work was instrumental to the success of the Ward Commission, whose 1980 report led to important reforms in public sector building practices. He also enjoyed the distinction of serving as the First Director of the Office of Special Investigation, created by Governor Dukakis in 1982, to address allegations of corruption and fraud in state government. After his retirement, he and his wife pursued their favorite hobbies of gardening and spending time with their family and many friends. Col. Agnes was an avid sports fan, especially if it concerned Everett High School Football, a team he quarterbacked in 1943. He and his wife divided their time between South Yarmouth, MA and West Palm Beach, FL. Funeral from the Salvatore Rocco & Sons Funeral Home, 331 Main St., EVERETT Monday, Dec. 15 at 9 AM. To Rita and the extended Agnes Family: I knew Peter for some years when we both worked at Middlesex. He was a very good man in all respects: always polite, always a professional, and always someone nice to know. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He is in my prayers.

My deepest sympathy to the Agnes family. I remember Mr Agnes growing up as a young boy about 6or7 years old. He was a very dear friend of my mother Helen Luciano. I remember when he worked at the Clam Box we would go there to have the best clams in the world. When I got older and I would see him at the Elks he always asked for my mother and my Mother would always ask me if I ever see him and to always say hi. He was the nicest man I ever met. he taught me how to be respectfull to people and to help people if I ever could. Now they are both gone and thats all I have left are my memories I was honored to know Mr. Agnes may you rest in peace. Say Hi to my Mother for me Mr. Agnes.Love Anthony Ranieri
