Lloyd Ohlin Obituary

OHLIN, Lloyd E. Age 90, died peacefully at home in Santa Barbara surrounded by loved ones on December 6, 2008. Lloyd, son of Elise Nelson and Emil Ohlin, was born in Belmont, Massachusetts. Lloyd had a distinguished career in academic work and public service. He received his BA from Brown University, his MA from Indiana University, and his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Chicago. He worked as a sociologist for the Illinois Parole and Pardon Board and later he directed the Center for Education and Research in Corrections at the University of Chicago. He taught at the Columbia University School of Social Work and Harvard Law School where he taught and conducted research at the Center for Criminal Justice until his retirement as the Touroff-Glueck Professor of Criminal Justice, Emeritus. He was president of the American Society of Criminology, recipient of the Edwin Sutherland Award and the Bruce Smith, Jr. Award from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. Lloyd served in the Army during World War II and the Korean War. He helped direct a program for President Kennedy's Committee on Juvenile Delinquency and Youth Crime and served as Associate Director of President Johnson's Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice. Lloyd had publications including Sociology and the Field of Corrections, and Delinquency and Opportunity (with Richard A. Cloward). A celebration of remembrance will be held in Steuben, Maine at a later date. Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served in the U.S. Army during WW II and the Korean War and for being a member of the Greatest Generation. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
