I will always remember that Roger liked to work with his hands. For a man with a mind like his I found this an interesting thing, but he was concerned with getting things as close to perfect as he could, and this often meant doing a task himself. I will never forget the simple joy that he took in installing the letters of the company sign over the front door at work, or in talking about the restoration of the house (including "The Adventure of the Copper Gutters").
I think that we will all remember Roger for his humor and sarcastic wit. He was so sharp and so fast that I often didn't get the barb until well after it had hit its mark, and he had waited to see it register
before chiding me for being slow and moving on.
But what I will remember most about Roger is that, to his core, he was a man of common decency. His compassion was often in counterpoint to his sarcasm, but it was clearly always there. I often sensed it when he talked about Marilyn or the golden retrievers; politics, or the law.
My friend Roger seemed to face life unflinchingly. I always admired him for that. He changed the people who know him for the better, and he left us much too early. He will be sorely missed.
My sincere condolences to Marilyn and the family.

Roger was my client, and became my friend. We didn't hit it off immediately, because he was a demanding client and, as a lawyer, had definite opinions about the way things should be done. But he was willing to listen to others and hear them out. We ultimately forged a friendship through some trying times in litigating a big case. Roger's sense of humor and cutting wit are the things I will remember. He was a good friend.
